RUNWAY: Viktor & Rolf Spring 2010

RUNWAY: Viktor & Rolf Spring 2010 emerging fashionHow Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren achieved their cutout ball-gowns this seasons is a physics lesson that goes way over my head. Viktor & Rolf sheds a whole new light on the use of tule, from blazer edges to full tiered skirts. To the fait of heart, much of the collection wouldn’t seem ready to wear, but I’m seriously contemplating moving south, becoming a debutante and giving myself a reason to get one of these incredible ball-gowns!

Is Arnhem the New Fashion Capital?

Is Arnhem the New Fashion Capital? menswear designers

Arnhem a city in the Netherlands which is described as a new direction in fashion.

Surprisingly, Arnhem has been off the fashion radar up until pretty much now, despite the fact that the fashion festival, Arnhem Mode Biennale, engulfs the whole city at once, celebrating the works of other dutch and european designers. With installations from fashion legends such as Calvin Klein, Viktor&Rolf, Maison Martin Margiela, Balenciaga, and of course the big guns; this is a festival for the fashion deprived to learn of fashion’s heroes.

Beautiful as it is, I wish every county had a city as inspirational as Arnhem, celebrating fashion as it is supposed to be, not as a taboo as it is in some counties. In simple terms, I think London should celebrate british and european designers in the same light, as London exports so much talent, if a festival was held as a tribute, it would be a worldwide celebration!

Hartmann Nordenholz was founded by Filip Fiska and Agnes Schorer in 2000, under the expert guidance of Helmut Lang, Marc Bohan and Jean-Charles de Castelbajac. Filip learned from the mastery of Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Viktor&Rolf and Raf Simons, but I think the collection stands on its own, away from other influencers.

RUNWAY RUNDOWN: Viktor & Rolf Fall 2009 emerging fashionTalk about a literal interpretation, Viktor & Rolf’s Fall 2009 collection looked straight out of the Greco-Roman sculpture exhibit at the MET. Draped sleeves, draped pants, draped coats, draped skirts…even draped hair! Stone-like gray prints and metallic color block fabrics were reminiscent of the Greek sculptures which sat on the background of the runway. The overly literal interpretation was a bit too cliche in my books, but hey, beautiful craftsmanship is beautiful craftsmanship. And the whole white painted face thing…please don’t.

Another amazing brand who decided to step off the runway this year, Viktor & Rolf have put together quite the collection for the Fall of 2009. The collection is a great mix between classy and casual, and may be the first one to successfully pull of the sneakers and a suit look since Jerry Seinfeld. The collection is a great mix of patterns, colors and even styles a bit. The collection was the first produced under Staff International (Renzo Russo) and there was more commercial appeal evident in the collection. Oh, and how awesome are the silver socks?

TrendSpark: Spooky Chic

Just because it’s Halloween doesn’t mean you have to wear a trashy witch costume, drench your body in fake blood or rekindle your youth by dressing like a baby. Now it’s all about the gothic spooky chic! No need for skanky pleather, chains and piercings galore, several designers for their Fall 2008/Spring 2009 collections have got soft gothic spooky chic down pat:

I don’t care if these fake eyelashes are part of the “couture collection”. I don’t care if they are in collaboration with the Dutch designers of Viktor & Rolf. I don’t care if you’ve got some obscene obsession with sparkles or lace or feathers. Fake eyelashes, no matter who makes them or what they are made of, are a no-no. I took one look at the photo above and thought two tarantulas were attacking the disgustingly pale model. Slap on the green feathered fakes and people will question your daily hygiene thinking you’ve mold growing out of your eyes. Please, save the fake eyelashes for the runways and the editorials. Remember, it’s all about the natural look (surprise, surprise) and I don’t know of anyone who was born with blue peacock feathers coming out of their face.

Thanks Shu Uemura!

BeautySpark: Viktor & Rolf for Shu Uemura Lashes all indieDefinitely my new addiction. Viktor & Rolf’s collaboration with the beauty experts at Shu Uemura has resulted in some of the most coveted lashes we’ve seen in sometime.

Of course they come with a $95 price tag, but can you really put a price on looking like a fucking doll faced beauty?!? Didn’t think so.  So before New Years or Halloween gets here pick them up.

You’ll thank us later.

You can grab these here.

Viktor & Rolfs Runway of the Future emerging fashion

Ever the innovators, Dutch design duo Viktor & Rolf have chosen to forgo the Paris runway this season, and instead present their new collection on their website.  This allows all fans to see the “Funny Face” collection (S/S 2009) at the same time, instead of getting it second hand.

The designers describe the October 2 show as “an actual show filmed in the Grand Salon of our virtual house.”  We’ll also get to see exclusive backstage footage of the show’s prep.

Thanks, WWD.

Creepy

Remember those creepy porcelain dolls your grandma used to keep behind protected glass in her home. The ones that would get dusted once a week an she insisted we’re “collectibles” that would one day pay for your college education. We do. And so do Gareth Pugh (pictured above), Christian Lacroix and Viktor & Rolf. The designers we’re asked to create costumes for the glass clowns that once used to hold the keys to your education. Of course their batch of clowns are worth a lot more than the ones your granny loved.

25 limited edition clowns were made and are valued at about $252,000 bucks. Sounds like Harvard education to me.

Viktor & Rolf: Welcome to the Dollhouse

Viktor & Rolf: Welcome to the Dollhouse all indie

We’ve written about it before, but didn’t feature many images, so here is another one with a great article written by Rose Apodaca of La Vie en Rose:

Part of the genius of Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren is that the Dutch design duo continue to snub the conventions of the fashion machine, not simply with their inventively elegant clothes but also by way of their showcases. So it’s nothing short of inspired that the pair decided not just to present a lot of banal mannequins and pretty pics at at the 15-year Viktor & Rolf retrospective opening this week at London’s Barbican Art Gallery, but porcelain dolls dressed in meticulously made versions of their greatest hits.

There are life-size porcelain figures, too, dressed in the 55 looks on display. But it’s the mini-me counterparts that are mindblowing, in a kind of freaky and fabulous way. There’s a Viktor & Rolf shop, too, filled with touristy takeaway likes scarves and their Flowerbomb perfume, but it’s the billed “curios” they’ve assembled that’s piqued my interest. That they also went ahead with a gallery, instead of a museum, and one that has never before hosted a fashion-related exhibition, was also in line with their maverick path.
The guys have always maintained that fashion represents a “fairytale world made real.” Welcome to the Dollhouse, indeed. So much lip service is paid to the art of fashion. But these two really think like artists.
I’m now rethinking our decision to skip London entirely on our way to Ireland at month’s end.
