We are well into the fifth day of Cannes Film Festival 2012, and the red carpet is alive with celebrities in couture. So far, we’ve seen the black ball gown make numerous appearances at premieres and parties, an elegant choice for the French festival. Now it’s time for these style stars to put on the ritz. Sequins and beading have been trending on the Cannes red carpet these last fews days, and you know we can’t resist a diva in sparkles. From the parties to the premieres, it’s all about the glitz and the glamour.

In 1976, year before Sid Vicious joined the Sex Pistols, an angsty musician in braces and leather dresses by the name of Poly Styrene started her own punk revolution in London’s Chelsea art scene. With her band, garnered by an ad she placed looking for “Young punx who want to stick it together,” X Ray Spex landed a weekly gig at Man in the Moon theater, right next door to Vivienne Westwood‘s store, then named Seditionaries. Years later, Poly lets out that their most famous song, her feminist cry, “Oh Bondage! Up Yours!” was inspired by Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren’s bondage pants.

Well, you can’t win ‘em all. Sarah Burton‘s wedding dress for the Duchess of Cambridge and Alexander McQueen‘s Savage Beauty exhibit had to take a backseat at the 2012 Design of the Year Awards as The Olympic Torch burned down the competition to take home the top prize.

Picasso once said of Marc Chagall, ”When Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what color really is.” His impeccable color palette, along with the style of the times (1915) laid ground for today’s look. This painting is aptly titled Birthday (for today is mine) and makes me yearn for deep reds and florals.

After a period of somber (and cheap) blue, Pablo Picasso broke out of his depression and into his Rose Period. ‘Twas a time of harlequins and acrobats, Parisian nightlife and a deep cheerfulness. The palette is a burning red, with yellow-orange accents and black and bronze undertones. Picasso’s two-year red phase started in 1904; get inspired by the turn of the century look.
