Nicola Formichetti Launching His Own High-Tech High Fashion Line

Always one to push the boundaries of fashion — whether in his role as creative director of Mugler, as stylist for Lady Gaga, or fashion director at Vogue Hommes Japan — for his own label Nicola Formichetti wants to take fashion into the digital age, incorporating technology in ways it’s never been used before.

“It’ll be very digitally oriented and high-tech,” the designer said of his line, christened Formichetti. Rather than debuting each season during fashion week, Formichetti will launch online some time in 2013, independent of seasons. “We’ve been working with the same fabrics, the same techniques for hundreds of years. That’s all great, but we need something new.”

Formichetti is working with an undisclosed technology company to create clothes that could possibly use solar power to charge the wearer’s phone and new fabrics and materials that could mold to a person’s body — “Why do you have to have a zipper when you can have a jacket that’s molded to your body?”

After years of devoting himself to various projects, Formichetti is finally devoting some time to himself. “This year I wanted to focus on my own dream. Being a stylist, you always hide behind a brand, but because of Gaga and Mugler, I needed to come out onto the scene. I had to embrace it.” [WWD]

Nicola Formichetti and Terry Richardson Take a Trip to Boys Town

Nicola Formichetti and Terry Richardson decided to double team a small army of boys for Vogue Hommes Japan‘s “Boys Town.” The result is an über stylish spread that brings to mind the heady male modeling days of the 1980s starring recent Humpday highlights Jordan and Zac Stenmark, Jesse Shannon, Rafael Perez, Arthur Gosse, Jamie Wise, Alexander Beck, Simon van Meerveene, Dae Na, Alex Michaels, Allen Taylor, German Ruiz, Hao Yun Xiang and fish-mouthed beauty Justin Halley. Seriously, I haven’t been so offended and/or inspired by a masculine face since Sebastian Sauvé slumped onto the scene. Anyhoo, take a ride into town with the boys of Vogue Hommes Japan.

While I’d love to believe that Nicola Formichetti exists solely to do Lady Gaga‘s fashion bidding, that simply isn’t the case. Jo Calderone might actually be the most reserved man Formichetti has styled to date. Boy is at werq in Japan turning out cover after editorial of monstrous male beauty for Vogue Hommes Japan. He’s also been killing it in Dazed & Confused and V Man. Take a look.

A striking, emaciated Asian hunching in a drop-crotch pant and opera glove. Daisuke Ueda covers Vogue Hommes Japan‘s “Eastern Promise” issue – out March 10th – shot by Steven Klein and styled by Nicola Formichetti — prompting me to ask, who else is excited for the Mugler show today?! If not, here’s a potential reason to get your shit together: Lady Gaga is not only the show’s musical director but is also making her runway debut as a model and previewing her new song, “Government Hooker.”

Okay, so: A.) It’s great that Gags and Formichetti have helped each other basically take over the world. B.) This is an example of some amazing marketing. And C.) Dead.

Lensed by Mariano Vivanco, Christopher Landon looks especially dashing striking a pose in a voluminous cape, hat at a dramatic angle.

Leaving black and white portraits behind, Slimane shot a simple and somewhat whimsical spread for Vogue Hommes Japan, representing American culture at its finest. Hollywood, ice hockey, hippies and the grand old American flag brought the USA on a transatlantic journey to the Japanese glossy!
