While most women would do anything for a teeny, tiny waist, how far is too far?  Ethel Granger, the woman with the smallest waist in history, shrunk hers down to a mere 13 inches!  In an effort to appease her husband’s beauty preferences she wore corsets 24 hours a day.  Find out more on this crazy couple and check out the gallery after the jump.

Vogue Italia Urges Bloggers to Become Ambassadors Against Eating Disorders

In her speech at Harvard, Franca Sozzani mentioned that she would ”soon launch a provocation to stop” pro-anorexia and pro-bulemia websites by asking “for the help of the users themselves.” Sozzani is nothing if not a woman of her word and so Vogue Italia has turned to its readers to blog about the dangers of eating disorders and these websites in particular.

Unbeweavable: Race and the Art of Black Hair Shows

The Bronner Bros International Hair Show has been going strong for over 60 years. The annual expo draws thousands of hair stylists and enthusiasts who show off their wild and imaginative hair creations, which no doubt served as inspiration for Vogue Italia‘s controversial “Haute Mess” editorial. Many were quick to label the spread as racist or classist, but that misses the point of the shows and the intentions behind those cuckoo coiffures. Like any other form of expression, the hair shows are open to interpretation, but at the end of the day it is an art that requires a level of skill and creativity. So it was especially discomforting when I was looking up photos for this story yesterday and I came across this site.

Franca Sozzani Thinks Racism Is in the Eye of the Beholder

There’s been a lot of flack about the interwebs regarding Vogue Italia‘s “Haute Mess” editorial shot by Steven Meisel, styled by Lori Goldstein and starring Joan Smalls, Coco Rocha, Lindsey Wixson, Daphne Groeneveld, Jessica Stam, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Guinevere van Seenus and Karen Elson in all their ghetto fabulous glory. Some feel it’s racially insensitive, some think it classist, but Franca Sozzani thinks people just see what they want to see. And hopefully you see a lot of “messy drag queen.”

You can barely flip through any fashion magazine without seeing the work of set designer Stefan Beckman. From ads for Banana Republic, Chanel, Calvin Klein and Dolce & Gabbana to editorials in W, various Vogues — including the holy grail, Vogue Italia, Interview and Vanity Fair, Beckman’s sets often steal the show. They often make the show as well — Beckman has created the imagniative sets for eight  Marc Jacobs runway presentations. In his spare time, he also lends his considerable talents to museum exhibits such as Joaquín Sorolla and the Glory of Spanish Dress and Balenciaga: Spanish Master. Get Pinspired.
