Fashion Week Internationale Wraps Up Its First Season in the Most Homophobic Place on Earth

You can’t keep a good gay down. At least that’s what I took away from the season finale of VICE‘s Fashion Week Internationale on Nigeria, a country of enormous civil unrest and institutionalized homophobia. However, while same sex marriage is a crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison,  hostess with the mostest Charlet Duboc learned that to get ahead in the burgeoning Nigerian fashion industry — or anywhere in Nigeria, for that matter — it (allegedly) behooves one to be a friend of Dorothy. Duboc couldn’t help but notice this conflicting duality which seems to mark the entire country during her time in Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city:

Vogue Italia Takes a Page Out of the Joan Rivers Playbook

QVC and HSN, once the domain of Marie Osmond‘s creepy fetishistic dolls and the legendary Joan Rivers Classics Collection has gotten a recent injection of diva with Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey taking to the air to hock their perfumes, clothing lines and pregnancy stories. For its first issue of the year, Vogue Italia, perhaps sensing a trend, tapped Steven Meisel and Karl Templer for this brilliant send-up of the home shopping networks featuring leggy ladies Joan Smalls, Karlie Kloss, Sigrid Agren, Caroline Trentini, Gertrud Hegelund, Daria Strokous and Natasha Poly. And if that weren’t enough to get your collective hearts beating in anticipation, there’s a…video. I’ve always loved rooting for an underdog and since her debut in 2004, Ciara‘s been steadily churning out booty-shaking hits while never quite attaining the level of success of say, a Rihanna, a Beyoncé or even an Ashanti. Luckily, Givenchy‘s brooding creative director Riccardo Tisci is similarly obsessed with Cici and, known for his love of dogs, has annointed her one of his muses. From Vogue covers to the Victoria’s Secret runway, the 19-year-old Chicago native has had quite a 2011,  crossing over into that rare pop culture terrain occupied solely by bona fide supermodels. I guess even Vogue Italia, that one link to editorial relevance in the Condé Nast stable of periodicals, can run afoul every now and then. Case in point, this bit of visual vomit Michelangelo di Battista threw up for their latest issue. Filmed in what could easily be your grandmother’s attic painted the most abhorrent shade of blue — with uninspired styling by Alice Gentilucci and listless and lifeless posing from Kristen Stewart whose hair apparently hasn’t seen a brush in ages –  this spread has Italian Vogue wading in levels of American Vogue dreckitude.  Enjoy after the jump.
