For the arresting (pun intended) cover of their sixth annual “Art Issue,” W employed controversial Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. The only problem is that Ai Weiwei had been detained by Chinese authorities in the spring for his criticisms of the government and after being released on June 22nd, he’s been under constant surveillance, making his collaboration with the fashion mag a feat of technology and ingenuity.

Carine Roitfeld is one busy gal. In addition to styling Chanel‘s Fall 2011 campaign shot by Karl Lagerfeld and starring Freja Beha Erichsen, allegedly starting an independent fashion mag, musing for Barneys and allegedly starting her own fashion line, the former Vogue Paris editrix will step in front of the camera for a fashion feature in an upcoming issue of W.

H&M, the Rolls Royce of fast fashion retailers, continues rolling in style with its latest big name designer collaboration, Donatella Versace.

While Elle had the biggest increase in ad pages during the first half of the year, InStyle had the largest number of ad pages for any fashion title, while Vogue continues to go strong and W‘s just happy to be in the game.

- At the McQueen press preview this morning, Stella McCartney and Sarah Burton shared their thoughts while Philip Treacy got a little misty-eyed over the Andrew Bolton-curated Alexander McQueen:Savage Beauty. Instead of a chronological trek through McQueenland, Bolton organized the exhibit into six themes: The Romantic Mind, Romantic Gothic, Romantic Nationalism, Romantic Exoticism, Romantic Primitivism, and Romantic Naturalism. I haven’t cared for the past few covers of W. They all looked the same and were kind of boring: a slate grey background, someone scowling at the camera, me rolling my eyes in the line at the supermarket. But if there’s anything I’ve learned in the past few months it’s that Mila Kunis makes everything better.
