“I’ve been collecting for 45 years and I’m only 40,” Reynolds told the auction audience, followed hopefully by a well-timed rimshot. The dress, acquired by Reynolds in 1971 when 20th Century Fox sold off all of Marilyn’s wardrobe, was expected to sell for $2 million.

The actress amassed some 3500 items over those four decades in an effort to preserve the luster of Hollywood’s Golden Age. However, failing to find a museum ready to take the collection as a whole and driven into debt by its upkeep, Debs sold over 600 of the collection’s effects off this weekend during a 12-hour auction.

Among other items sold:  the red sequined gown and feather headdress Marilyn wore in 1953′s Gentlemen Prefer Blondes for $1.47 million; Elizabeth Taylor‘s riding clothes from 1944′s National Velvet for $73,800; Charlie Chaplin‘s bowler hat from the “Little Tramp” films for $135,300; Gary Cooper‘s uniform from 1941′s Seargent York for $67,650; Grace Kelly‘s dress from 1955′s To Catch a Thief for $450,000; Judy Garland‘s dress and ruby slippers from a screen test for 1939′s The Wizard of Oz for $1.75 million; Rudolph Valentino‘s matador outfit from 1922′s Blood and Sand for $258,000; and Audrey Hepburn‘s ascot dress from 1964′s My Fair Lady for $3.7 million. Angelina Jolie is rumored to play the Wicked Witch of the West?!? Say it ain’t so. Don’t get me wrong, I love Angelina Jolie. I love her enough to tell her not to do this, as it is NOT the role of a lifetime. Gia was that for her. Forget about Angelina Jolie for a minute and let’s just discuss why anyone in Hollywood thinks they have what it takes to take on the challenge of remaking The Wizard of Oz. And please don’t tell me that Tim Burton wants to do it. Though he is brilliant and everything, his technicolor weirdness would just get in the way of this great, simple, classic story. I am sure that his wife Helena Bonham Carter would insist on playing the Wicked Witch of the West. Then there’s Jerry Bruckheimer, who yields all sorts of power in Hollywood, kind of like the Wizard as it were, who has tackled the romantic comedy genre with Confessions of a Shopaholic, and would see this as his greatest feat. Please Lord…just say no. The reason why The Wiz worked (though it was really bad) was by redoing it as a black, urban production, you took that leap of faith. Michael Jackson as Dorothy felt very natural because in essence, he was Dorothy, and lived out that fantasy till his untimely death. And Diana Ross as old Dorothy was a goddess….so we forgave her. I mean she was The Boss.

I still say, “Don’t do this…anyone”. So let’s say I am out numbered, they greenlight the remake and the casting begins. Can I at least make my suggestions? Rather than try to make The New Improved Loud Wizard of Oz, a big gaudy production, why not do an eight party TV series with all the best reality show stars.

Dorothy: Rachel Uchitel…ask Gloria Allred, she is a damsel in distress and dying to be an actress.

Scarecrow: Jake Pavelka (The Bachelor)….he will do anything to stay on television.

Tin Man: Jesse James, this might be the only way to remotely make him watchable. And when he starts boo-hooing about cheating on Sandra, Rachel (Dorothy) can oil him up. Chances are though, they will get caught fucking in Enchanted Forest. (Lions and tigers and skanks…oh, my.)

The Lion: Clay Aiken, after his stint on Broadway, he is a shoe-in for this role. A gay wuss.

The Wizard: Jill Zarin, come on…she is THE biggest know it all. And the changing up of the sex for this casting is a stroke of genius.

Glenda, The Good Witch: Indrani, (a.k.a. Cougar Lesbian) though you may not know her yet, she is the star of the upcoming Bravo-TV series, Double Exposure. You’ll see why I say she should do it. That is if you Watch What Happens.

As part of this celebration, Warner Bros. Consumer Products in partnership with CRYSTALLIZED™ – Swarovski Elements invited the world’s top shoe designers to reinterpret Dorothy’s iconic Ruby Slippers for modern times.

“If Dorothy were living in the 21st century, what would she wear?” was the question answered by The Wizard of Oz Ruby Slipper Collection, a creative re-interpretation of one of film’s most iconic and revered symbols which has captured the hearts and imaginations of people the world over. Designers, including A. Testoni, Abaete, Alberta Ferretti, Betsey Johnson, Botkier, Christian Louboutin, Diane von Furstenberg, Giuseppe Zanotti, Jimmy Choo, L.A.M.B. by Gwen Stefani, Lisa Pliner, Manolo Blahnik, Moschino, Oscar de la Renta, Roger Vivier, Sergio Rossi, Stuart Weitzman, Tibi, and Tuleh, were granted creative license and access to unlimited CRYSTALLIZED™ – Swarovski Elements to re-imagine Dorothy’s design with their own modern vision of the sparkling Ruby Slipper.

Since its debut one year ago in New York City to kick off Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, the Collection has toured more than 20 prestigious destinations around the world, including Los Angeles, Miami, Paris, Tokyo, Dubai and Melbourne. The Ruby Slipper Collection and original design sketches will now be auctioned online by Charity Folks beginning 10:00 AM EST on September 10 to benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. The public has one final chance to view The Ruby Slipper Collection in entirety at the Swarovski CRYSTALLIZED™ flagship store at 499 Broadway in New York City from September 10th — 23rd; the exhibit will be run simultaneously to the online auction.

Also featured in the auction are select pieces from The Inspirations of Oz Fine Art Collection which premiered during the highly anticipated and revered Art Basel Miami Beach 2008. An acclaimed array of artists were among the chosen few selected to re-interpret The Wizard of Oz through their own unique visions and artistic mediums. Included in the auction are one-of-a-kind interpretive works of art including painting, drawing and sculpture from esteemed artisans Angelo Aversa, Romero Britto, Nelson De La Nuez, Todd White and Yakovetic.

The auction will culminate at 10:00 PM on Thursday, September 24, with the Warner Bros. I have to say, these red booties are much more fashionable than Dorothy’s.  I can’t say I’ve ever seen someone be able to pull off fire engine red shoes without being hideously tacky.  And the sequin tuxedo jacket? Love.

This is a sneak peak of Sergio Rossi’s version of Dorothy’s famous ruby red shoes, as part of a particularly fashionable commemoration of the 70th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz.

Incorporating CRYSTALLIZED™ Swarovski Elements, Sergio Rossi joins 19 other designers including Betsey Johnson, Christian Louboutin and Manolo Blahnik to reinterpret the character’s iconic slippers as part of a showcase and auction to raise money for the Elizabeth Glaser Paediatric AIDS foundation.

The fruits of their fashionable labour will be unveiled at Saks Fifth Avenue on September 4 before moving to Bryant Park on September 5 for the start of New York Fashion Week. Public viewings are also planned throughout 2009.

Personally, I think this doesn’t at all resemble the original slippers, with the 8 inch heal and sex kitten like swirls. I would have preferred to see an actual updated remake…Now Betsy Johnson should be able to do this no prob!

Upon the 70th anniversary of the Wizard of Oz, Designers whipped out their sketch pads for the ultimate recreation. Twenty designers have decided to commemorate the anniversary with their creative minds and a bit of ruby coloring with a sparkle. The recreations will be used to benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation in the form of an auction, which is set to take place in early fall 2009. Two pairs of shoes by each designer will be produced for the auction. Until then, the pumps will make their main appearance at Saks Fifth Avenue and in Bryant Park throughout the upcoming year. Among the designers for the commemoration are Oscar de la Renta, Diane Von Furstenberg, Manolo Blahnik, Betsy Johnson, Amy Smilovic, and Jimmy Choo. Can’t wait to see the creations!
