The Hyères prize is as good a litmus test for fashion’s future as any design competition can be. The likes of Viktor and Rolf, Gaspard Yurkievich and Felipe Oliveira Baptista have debuted at the innovative festival, so it is no shock that this year’s contest introduces us to some idiosyncratic talents. Among them, winner Alexandra Verschueren stands out as an exceptionally individual voice. Looking at her collection it is easy to see why she won the competition; origami inspired fashions have become increasingly popular in recent seasons, but at their best Verschueren’s pieces eschew the trappings of their paper inspirations. There are strange and intriguing new shapes, but there are also smart updates on classic pieces, like the cocktail dress that looks as though it was reshaped by pinking shears, or any of the one of a kind coats. Their range breathes fresh life into the simple concepts; everyone will be wearing a camel coat come fall, but how many boast geometrical frills remniscent of wearable graph paper? The strength of Verschueren’s work lies in its ability to elevate these normal staples into something magical.

Steven Madden Ltd. is venturing into womenswear. “I’m very excited about creating trend-right ready-to-wear for the Steve Madden customer,” said Mr. Madden.

Described as having a bohemian flare, the line will include dresses, boyfriend jackets, and tons of exposed zippers and hardware, and will hit department stores in the Spring.

I’m a huge fan of Karl’s work for Chanel, but when it comes to his namesake brand I feel we’re getting a bit shafted.

Especially considering the chunky piano-guitar player in the beginning. Seriously, no matter how hipster you’re trying to be, that will never, ever be cool. Also, did you see how Karl Lagerfeld walks out at the end? Does he have a joint problem or does he just enjoy make-believing he’s driving a car at all times?

Amen, amen I say to you! Tome Ford recently told WWD that he will, in fact, be launching a womenswear line “very soon.” Ford’s businesspartner, Domenico De Sole, is on the hunt for some financing, and once the monetary aspect is all squared away, we can expect a womenswear collection to hit the runways about 18 months after! I sense some of the best androgyny is lurking in the near future!

While there were definitely strong pieces in her collection, including this bowed asymmetrical pink gem,  I feel that this collection lacked the direction and vision of some recent women’s new comers. Still fresh from the mean halls of Parsons, Nima has all the potential to become a great fresh face, but first she needs a handle on styling a collection.
