- Time Magazine has opened up the polls for its annual Time 100 list where you can vote on who are the most influential people in the entire world. People like Jessica Simpson, Ashton Kutcher and LMFAO. No one said it was a good influence. Meanwhile, poor Khloe’s in a caftan, probably because it was easier than actually slapping her in the face. [Fashionista]

- Gucci and Guess have finally taken their three-year copyright battle to court where Guess’ own lawyer routinely insults his client’s quality and lack of class: “Guess doesn’t slap a house name on a product, Guess screams its name, it surrounds you…Gucci uses leather, Guess uses plastic, that’s why it costs 100 bucks.” That kind of defense you can’t buy.

Well, the Oscars literally put me to sleep. Maybe I saw too much Marchesa on the red carpet and I succumbed to the proliferation of shots, but I was comatose by 10, 10:30. Billy Crystal did what he could in his 9th stint as host, a thankless job if there ever was one, but the show nonetheless dragged on and I tapped out around Best Cinematography. Therefore I missed Meryl Streep picking up her third Oscar, Jean Dujardin sticking it to George Clooney and The Artist becoming the first silent film to win the Best Picture Oscar since 1929. Damn you Georgina Chapman.

None of these wins came as surprises, nor did Octavia Spencer and Christopher Plummer cleaning up in the Supporting categories, which is probably the real reason I fell asleep. This Academy Awards, I was the least invested I’ve ever been. though I was hoping that Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig would be triumphant in the Best Supporting Actress and Original Screenplay categories, respectively. But the awards season track record was already against them. Like Woody Allen needed another Oscar.

In the end, Hugo and The Artist both won five trophies but the most important moment was clearly Meryl Streep ending her near 30 year losing streak by picking up a much-deserved third Oscar. Greatest living actress, indeed.

Anyway, take a gander at all the winners and let us know who you thought shoulda won, and who you thought shoulda just stayed home.

The nominees for the 84th annual Academy Awards were announced this morning and most importantly, Melissa McCarthy was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Bridesmaids. Everything else…eh.

I always love when a comedic performance gets some recognition and while the film was excluded from the list of NINE Best Picture nominees, Kristen Wiig scored a nod for her brilliant screenplay with Annie Mumolo. Meanwhile, if that trash Diablo Cody can win for Juno, Wiig might want to ready her acceptance speech.

Hugo leads the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Director for Martin Scorsese – his seventh career Best Director nom and ninth overall — and Best Picture. It will compete against The Artist – a close second with 10 nominations — and out of seemingly nowhere, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, which has garnered mixed reviews and has been pretty much absent during awards season. But, c’mon, it’s a 9/11 movie, who’s really surprised?

Other Best Picture contenders include Steven Spielberg’s critically-mixed War Horse, Terrence Malick‘s The Tree of Life — which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes a while back –, The Help, Moneyball, The Descendants and Woody Allen‘s Midnight in Paris.

Allen, it should be noted, snatched his 22nd and 23rd Oscar nods. Take notes, kids.

Also racking up an ungodly amount of Oscar gold this year is (unsurprisingly) Meryl Streep, who scored her 17th Academy Award nomination for her role in The Iron Lady. She will face off against Michelle Williams, Viola Davis, frequent nemesis Glenn Close and surprise nominee Rooney Mara for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Tilda Swinton was once again robbed of a nomination — this time for We Need to Talk About Kevin.

The Best Actor category has BFFs George Clooney and Brad Pitt going head-to-head, while relative unknown Demián Bichir snuck in for the little-seen indie film, A Better Life. The Artist‘s Jean Dujardin, fresh off his Golden Globe win, is also nominated and after decades of generally shutting shit down, Gary Oldman scored his first Oscar nomination for the British film, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Awards season is in full swing as we inch ever closer to the grand daddy of them all, the 2012 Academy Awards. The next step on the road to Oscar is its British equivalent, the BAFTAs. The Artist is quickly emerging as a front-runner favorite this year, scoring nominations in all the major categories including Best Film, Leading Actor, Leading Actress, Best Director and Original Screenplay. Meanwhile, Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams, fresh off their Golden Globe wins, will go head-to-head against The Artist‘s Bérénice Bejo, Tilda Swinton for We Need to Talk About Kevin and Viola Davis for The Help in what is easily the most competitive and interesting category. And chances are the same names will be read out come Oscar night. But until then, full list of the 2012 BAFTA nominees after the jump!

Hollywood’s wildest night was a bit on the tame side as the 2012 Golden Globes lapsed into occasional coma. Host Ricky Gervais was more well-behaved and seemingly less drunk this year than last — a bad decision on both counts — though there was some well-played shtick regarding Jodie Foster‘s Beaver. The stars, however, came prepared with their own jokes with the best comeback of the night courtesy of Best Original Song winner, Madonna. After being introduced by Gervais, Madge quipped: “If I’m just like a virgin, Ricky why don’t you come over here and do something it? I haven’t kissed a girl in quite a few years…” A collective snap arose from the Beverly Hilton after the Material Girl dropped that sass bomb, though to be fair, she’s been on a roll as of late. The rest of the night was a series of mild shock — mostly thanks to Angelina Jolie‘s <del>inspiring</del> scary skeletal frame — and even milder surprises thanks to a few upsets in the TV category where shows no one watches nabbed some of the top prizes while in the film category. No one was shocked, however, when Meryl Streep won Best Actress in a Drama, except Meryl Streep, who garnered another Globe for that reaction on her way up to accept for The Iron Lady. Full list of winners after the jump!

It’s been one hell of a year for a certain occasionally-bearded, dog-loving thespian cum hunk cum meme. While some — read: everyone — feel he was unjustly robbed of another award earlier this year, Ryan Gosling is getting a double dose of appreciation from the 69th annual Golden Globe Awards. He’s pulled quite the hat-trick, getting nominated twice this year for Best Actor in a Comedy and Drama. Bradley Cooper was, to the surprise of everyone — read: no one — was not nominated for Limitless.

As big as the Globes’ crush is on Gosling, it can’t hold a candle to the raging boner the Hollywood Foreign Press has for George Clooney, who’s nominated for three awards — Best Director and Best Screenplay for The Ides of March and Best Actor for The Descendants.
In a plot that sounds like the long-discarded gay Ocean’s 11 sequel, Ocean’s 69, a gang of five masked robbers “neutralized” a security guard and four employees at the Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport terminal on Friday, before making out with 10 pallets of Louis Vuitton goods.

Authorities are currently looking into the matter, but they had better look quick. The rule of 3s dictates that another crime will take place and the smart money is on Dior, as everything Marc Jacobs seems to touch — whether he wants to or not — goes missing.
Chico’s, that middle-aged, middle brow, middling clothes horse, has signed on Oscar winner/my fairy godmother Diane Keaton to appear in commercials and print ads for their holiday campaign.

“This is my first [fashion campaign]. I love clothes. Can’t you tell?” said La Keaton, tongue firmly in cheek(o). Despite her modesty, Diane Keaton’s style credentials are as solid as they come. Her portrayal of scatterbrained, gender-bending heroine Annie Hall in Woody Allen‘s seminal romantic comedy is still one of the most iconic leading ladies in cinema and fashion.

And since 2006, she’s been a face of L’Oréal Paris. I do have to say, though, those Chico’s trousers are unflattering as all get out…but I digress.

In the Chico’s commercials, Diane shares her thoughts on life, love, family and clothes, such as this little gem she shared with WWD: “Love makes the world go ’round. And so do hats and gloves and a fabulous belt.” Oh, Diane, how’d you get so wise?

The print ads will start making their appearance this November in publications such as O, The Oprah Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar and InStyle with the commercials debuting this holiday season. The campaign’s tagline is “Live for the present” and as a little present — just because I’ll jump at any chance to write about Diane Keaton — have a little bit of this with your morning coffee:

Uma Thurman has always been an A-List actress, but at Cannes last month, Uma took her fashion choices to the next level and blew the competition out of the water. Thurman sat alongside Jude Law, Robert De Niro and six others on the 64th Annual Cannes Film Festival jury, requiring that she not only watch all 20 films in the competition, but also attend red carpet premiers, photo calls and after-parties in her Cannes best.

Uma’s white lace Dolce & Gabbana dress demonstrates just why white is a go-to look for this summer – it’s fun, refreshing and easy to dress down or class-up with a good pair of shoes. White was a trend in Thurman’s picks for the red carpet throughout Cannes, and included this white Chanel she wore to the Pirates of the Caribbean premiere.

For the opening ceremony and the screening of Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, Uma wore a knockout white, feathered Versace gown that had jaws dropping left and right. She knew it too, because she offered up some absolutely charming quotables to the The Daily Mail UK , saying, “I feel so good wearing the dress, I hope I get a chance to dance… It’s a dress that moves well when you dance. I was doing a quiet little dance all by myself on the carpet just now.” We are right there with you!

We love how Uma works with her height to pair adorable flats with long dresses, which is a more comfortable alternative to tall heels and is very on-trend for summer. Uma commented on her height and dressing for Cannes, mentioning, “I had to have it made because you know how it is for us tall girls. It’s impossible to find anything in a store.”

Another notable fashionista that left us dancing for joy was Kirsten Dunst, who emerged from recent acting (and everything else of note) obscurity to not only take home the award for Best Actress for her role in the movie Melancholia, but also secure herself a spot on more than a few Cannes best dressed lists.

I am thrilled that Rachel chose this Marchesa dress from the fall 2011 line – it was one of my favorites from the collection. She looks gorgeous, but I really wish her hair would have been up. I think that is such a huge factor in letting the statement factor of this dress shine through.

These two Jersey creatures are the Grossest of Gross Baboons.

Announcing the newest candidates for Gross Baboon of the Year Award, Real Housewives of New Jersey, Teresa and Joe Guidice. Reading about their spendaholic, bankruptcy-inducing shenanigans made me really angry. As someone born in that fair state, the recent bevvy of Gross Baboons with New Jersey blazoned on their foreheads is enough to make anyone lie about where they hail from. We now have The Real Housewives, that lame show Jeseylicious, and even the cast of Jersey Shore, though none of them are from there, but MTV has managed to muck it up anyway. Until recently, it was Woody Allen who had make it difficult to admit that I was originally from there. Here is an excerpt from my book explaining why that is:

In Sleeper, Woody Allen pokes fun at people from New Jersey.

LAST FIVE MINUTES OF FAME

I will never forgive Woody Allen. No, not for what he did to Mia Farrow by taking Soon Yi, her adopted daughter, as his lover and then, wife. That transgression was much easier for me to excuse compared to what Woody Allen did to me, personally, being a resident from the state of New Jersey. Let me explain. Back in the 1970’s, Woody Allen made movies people actually went to see. His classics like Sleeper, Play It Again Sam and Everything You Wanted To Know About Sex were brilliant, however, these films contained condescending (and yes, perhaps humorous) references to my home state. These scathing digs made audiences howl with laughter, and he ingrained into pop culture the notion that people from “New Joisey” were disadvantaged. Sitting there in the dark sold-out Baronet-Coronet theater, I would slink down deep into the burgundy, polyester, uncomfortable seat, covering my head with the large tub of extra buttered popcorn as though a flashing neon arrow identified me as the lone resident from that sad little state. Seething, I vowed to get my revenge on Woody Allen one day. He’d made it so that I wished I had never heard of New Jersey, let alone being a resident. This surely was a conundrum. How was I going to achieve greatness along the lines of Bette Davis, Spencer Tracy or Mahatma Gandhi? How was I going to become a member of the fabulii? Once they discovered where I was from, was my membership to the fabulii at risk of being canceled? (Sigh.) Somehow, someway, I was determined to wiggle my five foot-by-five foot frame into the pop culture vernacular and once there…happily crush Mr. Allen like a bug.

To be continued….

Back to The Guidos, I mean, Giudices. According to the New York Post, they earn $79,000 a year, however, they live in a multi-million dollar home and are hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt on credit cards. According to court papers, they are eleven million dollars in the hole. $11,000,000?!? How does that even happen? Both them and their banker should be pussy whipped. Well, Joe must be already, so we can just bitch slap her and the banker. The excesses of the 90’s and 2000’s is long over. And seeing the residual effect of that time is enough to make my skin crawl. It is the selfishness, greed and pretense of the Giudices that is systemically wrong with our culture. How are these people going to keep up with the Jones’ of their own mind? Hence…nominees for Gross Baboon of the Year Award.

Taking inspiration from throwaway materials and Frankenstein’s legendary monster, Dazed & Confused this month presents its ‘Franken-Fashion’ masks project… a unique creative collaboration with some of the world’s top designers, including such names as Alexander McQueen, Gareth Pugh, Martin Margiela, Hussein Chalayan, Roberto Cavalli, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and Riccardo Tisci.

Each of the 13 designers involved created a mask especially for Dazed, using scraps lying around the designers’ studios – look out for rubber gloves, leather offcuts and even an old lampshade! Modelled by the fabulous Guinevere van Seenus, shot by Daniel Jackson and styled by Dazed senior fashion editor Karen Langley, while more Franken-fashion comes from Richard Burbridge, Magnus Unnar, Mark Pillai and Max Farago.

Turning green on the Hackney streets, Dazed also meets Laura Mulleavy of fast-rising label Rodarte to talk horror chic, while talented British actress Rebecca Hall take a break from theatre to discuss Dorian Gray, Woody Allen and sex dolls. Dazed also freaks out with the next generation of psychedelic artists, cutting up internet graphics and 80s TV ads to create mind-bending new works that reflect our media-saturated age. Meanwhile, the scuzzy musicians at the heart of the underground lo-fi music scene get real about whether it’s a movement or just a bunch of people making noise – with Wavves, Blank Dogs, Times New Viking, Woods, Kurt Vile, A Grave With No Name and many more.

Elsewhere in October’s Dazed, notorious installation artist Nancy Kienholz, cult comedy duo Tim & Eric, the world’s first black supermodel Donyale Luna, the Slits’ Ari-Up, Brigitte Bardot dressed as a superhero, and the most snappily dressed 60s apocalypse cult you’ll ever see.

The Dazed & Confused October ‘Franken-Fashion’ special issue is on sale on Thursday September 17.

But remember ladies, keep the hair and makeup feminine and simple to avoid the butch/costume/tranny look!

American Apparel has come up with an answer for why the Jew Yorker was featured on billboards for the sexually explicit brand, it was a joke.

The Daily News reports, “American Apparel is certainly not marketing their casual wear to Orthodox, black hat rabbis,” said the California company’s lawyer Stuart Slotnick.

The 72-year-old Allen says he never gave the company permission to use an image from the movie “Annie Hall” on billboards in Los Angeles and New York. The billboards have come down, but the image is on the Internet.

American Apparel says the billboards were meant as parody and therefore fair game for anyone to use.

Whether the lawsuit will continue is anyones guess but you’d think that Woody Allen would have a sense of humor. Besides most American Apparel shoppers have no idea who the fuck Allen is, they probably missed the joke completely and figured it was just some photo of a rabbi, not as funny I’m sure, but the comedy in imagining Allen being pissed at Dov is classic.

Hit & miss director Woody Allen seems to have some series problems with the Dov. He doesn’t want his name, or face, associated with American Apparel and he’s none too pleased that the house that photos of half-naked sweaty, herpes victims built is using his image to hawk over priced tees. The company used an image from his 1977 film Annie Hall on a few of their billboards back in May and Woody recently filed suit seeking $10 million in damages, or the cumulative amount his films have made since Annie Hall. Apparently, $30 t-shirts and neon lycra body suits are not kosher.
