Over the weekend, big-box stores T.J. Maxx and Marshall’s lured a group of bloggers to their HQ in Framingham, Massachusetts, to chat. The stores revealed that they basically have buyers all over the world working around the clock to nab cheap designer duds, including in-season stuff! Fashionista reports:

“Over 40 weeks out of the year, buyers are on the road brokering last minute deals with over 12,000 vendors in more than 60 countries. They can buy surplus when a vendor has over-produced, or buy returns when a major department store has backed out of an order. And while department stores return merch to the vendors when they don’t sell it, T.J. Maxx and Marshalls buy their merchandise for keeps so they can get goods at a much better price. They also have the power to buy in varying quantities since they can place goods in all stores, or just select stores.

So if you take these stores at their word, an endless staff scurrying for deals via surplus duds and/or last-minute back-outs explains why a cheap in-season Marc Jacobs dress could end up on the floor of a Marshall’s for a lot less money than it costs when displayed in a boutique. The more you know …

Remember when you were 16, you and all your cool friends would hang out by the beach, with your long hair, perfect bone structure and lithe
bodies, while spending long days with hot boys, and life was perfect
without a care in the world? yeah. me neither.

Maybe that’s part of the reason why i love Nirrimi Hakanson’s photography. I adore a window, when left open, into other people’s
worlds via imagery. Her mantra, someone who is “loud through images”
suits her well.

I think I also want to BE Nirrimi Hakanson. Her work is exceptional. Breathtaking. If the fact that she is only 17 doesn’t make you feel old
and talentless I don’t know what will.

On her first interview in three years: 

“I was burned-out with having other people tell the story about me that
they wanted to tell. I told my publicist, ‘I’m not going to talk
anymore. I’m just going to live my life and be who I am.’”

On being asked to be on the cover of the September issue of Vogue: 

“What that means for a woman of color and what that means in the
fashion world, what that means to pop culture, there was no way I could
say, ‘No I’m not going to be on the biggest issue of the year.’”

On the “Oscar curse”:  

“Everybody talks about the
Oscar curse,” she says. “People win Oscars, and then it seems like they
fall off the planet. And that’s partly because a huge expectation walks
in the room and sits right down on top of your head. The moment I won
the Oscar, I felt the teardown the very next day. I thought, If I’m
going down, I’m going down taking chances and daring to risk. Hence…Catwoman.”

On her appreciation of the female body:  

“I love the naked female form…. I just feel like that’s the most empowered position you can be in.”
“That comes with age,” she says. “I’ve been slowly getting there.
If the world wouldn’t persecute me, I’d take nude pictures every day of
the week.”

On her relationship and breakup with Gabriel Aubry:

“It’s just that you realize you are not meant to go the
distance with everybody,” she says. “We were meant to bring this amazing
little person into the world. And I think that’s why we came together.
And because of that, we are going to be together forever, all three of
us. We are a family until we are not here anymore.”

“We have always been friends, we’re still friends, we love each
other very much, and we both share the love of our lives. And we are
both 100 percent committed to being the best parents we can be. And
while it was not a love connection for us, he was absolutely the right
person to have this child with because she is going to have an amazing
father. And that was really important to me. We’ll make sure we always
do what is right for her and put her first. And she will see as she
grows that we have a lot of love for each other.”

The latest celeb news has top actress and star of recent movie Salt Angelina Jolie celebrating her son Maddox’s ninth birthday with a birthday party at Go Kart World in Carson, California. Jolie also recently told The Daily Telegraph that her family “is both my strength and my weakness.”

Mother of six and celebrity fashion trend maker Jolie, who is raising the children with Brad Pitt, told the Telegraph her kids make her “feel like the most important person in the world.” She also said she loves being able to live in different places around the world.

But her son’s birthday party couldn’t have been more All-American, with Maddox, his siblings and friends eating cake and pizza and zooming around the Mini Indy Track in Go Karts. Asked how she feels about Maddox getting his driver’s license for real in a few years, Jolie responded, “I’m not ready for any of it.”

? It’s hard to summarize something so diverse as street style and fashion, but Singapore is known for its fusion of the east and the west. This applies to our street style too: You can see a distinct separation between Japanese-inspired fashion, and western influnced style. I would say it’s about a 50-50 mix of the both in the streets of Singapore, although sometimes you can see an interesting mix between the two!

? In general, layering of clothing is not a trend in Singapore. This has got to do with our warm and humid climate – it is simply too warm outside to experiment with much layering! (Doesn’t stop us from doing it, but we do have a flagrant disregard for dressing for the weather.) This applies to head wear like hats and berets as well. Without such warm weather, I am sure we can see a wider variety of styles on our streets.

? I would say the fashion, or perhaps culture, is to dress down in Singapore. For some reason (which I do not approve of), people think it’s alright to dress in t-shirts and slippers to shop in town! But let’s put aside my prejudices and focus on the street style: Lots of flats and gladiator sandals, shorts and tank tops. I have seen a rise in the number of girls wearing heels lately, but a large percentage of them still prefer flats to heels and wedges. Any boots that goes higher than ankle boots are rarely seen.

Tips for dressing for Singapore

I suppose this section would be pretty useful for foreigners travelling to Singapore! I hope this can inspire Singaporeans to dress up more as well, because it is entire possible.

? Like I’ve already mentioned above, Singapore is hot and humid year round, so breathable materials like cotton, jersey and chiffon is always in fashion. On the contrary, do try to avoid fabrics like PVC and leather. It’s too hot for them and you will find yourself sweating up a storm and having heat rashes – Not very attractive and healthy!

• One additional tip for leather and pleather in Singapore. Heat and humidity encourages the growth of mould and fungus. Organic materials like leather can and will grow mould if you don’t take care of it! I’ve had many boots succumb to irreversible mould infestation. Pleather won’t get mouldy, but it will peel and flake. To prevent this from happening, remember to store your leather and pleather in a dry environment. Dry the items well should they come in contact with water. Investing in a dehumidifier will do you well in the long term!

? Layering is still very much possible despite the heat in Singapore. The key to layering in Singapore is to stick to light, breathable fabrics: Silks, Chiffons and tulle for example. Arissa shows you how it can be done here and here as well! I love how layering different pieces can create a totally different style and look, so do not discount this just because of the weather! Singapore fashion doesn’t have to be boring just because it is hot.

This Alexander Wang-inspired top may be made of jersey, but it’s light and breathable. Pieces like this are perfect for layering.

? Weather in Singapore can only be described as being erratic. It can be sunny one moment, and pouring the very next. Hence, it might do you well to carry a light cardigan or blazer around at all times. Furthermore, almost all indoor places in Singapore are air-conditioned. It can actually get pretty chilly inside! I always carry with me a jacket for those times where I have to spend time indoors with air-conditioning at full-blast. Scarves work equally well! It’s not uncommon to see many Singaporean girls wearing light jackets and scarves on the streets.

It doesn’t have to be a thick jacket. This one made of jersey from Topshop does an adequate job!

? We have an extremely efficient network of roads and public transport system. So it is entirely possible to wear heels without much discomfort! Heels can do wonders to an outfit and I find it a pity that most Singaporean girls have yet to integrate them into their wardrobe. There are only so much flats you can have before they all start to look the same. Kick up your style a notch by wearing heels! Some outfits look so much better with heels than flats anyway, heels does so much more for your look than flats. Wearing a kickass pair of heels on the streets is one sure fire way to stand out in Singapore.

Wedges are a comfortable and stylish alternative to flats.

“When you love what you do, you never actually work a day in your life” states Jeff Staple, Founder and Creative Director of Staple Designand Reed Spacein an interview for Por Homme – Road to (capsule). Staple Design is a visual communications agency that is based in New York and has three main divisions: a clothing collection, a creative agency and a retail store and have various successful collaborations with companies including Nike, LVMH, HBO and New Museum of Contemporary Art. Staple produces a lifestyle menswear collection that includes two main lines: Staple, which is mostly graphic and print tees and tops, and STPL a cut & sew collection that is distributed all over the world. They are also responsible for the infamous Staple Pigeon shoes that are so high in demand that they retail for no less than around 2000 US Dollars. This impressive resume would lead any normal person to feel as if they are on top of the world but Jeff Staple continues to be humble and appreciate everything around him while “not working” everyday of his life. Roberto Cavalli, one of the favorite couture fashion designers of top celebrities, is the designer of the outfit  worn by singer Shakira at the World Cup Closing Ceremonies Sunday. Shakira has already worn two Cavalli creations at the opening festivities in South Africa.

Fashion sketches show that the outfit for the closing concert has a silk-fringed skirt featuring ethnic prints and pink flowers. The separate top is embroidered with pearls in multiple colors. Fashion accessories will include bracelets made of leather and adorned with floral silk.

During the World Cup 2010 Opening Ceremonies, Shakira wore a one-piece zebra print catsuit along with a frayed silk skirt. Cavalli may find his own creation to be a tough act to follow!

I left on vacation single and I came back from vacation ENGAGED.  The Don likes it so much he put a ring on it!  I'm blessed to be able to tell the story that I was engaged in Egypt in front of the pyramids after riding a camel through the Sahara Desert to get there.  Truly memorable.

One of my favorite fashion blogs The Cut posted a slide show of the 12 Best Looks of Paris Couture.

“Couture is a dying art. It encompasses the world’s smallest workshops, accessible to only the privileged few, and boasts techniques and workmanship operating at a level most of us can’t even dream about. That said, I love that it exists alongside the H&Ms of the world, and really want to see it continue.”

It would be terrible to see haute couture go. It’s such an important part of fashion – it shows the real creativity of the designers.

Even though these dresses can’t be worn to most occasions, they’re not meant to be – that’s what makes them so special.

All in all, there was a total of 14 yellow cards given out, the most ever in World Cup history. It was the first time Spain has ever won the cup, and could have been the first for the Netherlands as well. Now we can sit and wait another four years for the excitement. Photos via ESPN.
