David Armstrong

David Armstrong grew up outside Boston and traveled between his hometown and New York City when he studied at Cooper Union. After receiving his BFA at Tufts University in 1988, he moved to NYC permanently where he began work as a photographer. Starting out with black and white portraits, Armstrong began to experiment with landscapes and cityscapes in the nineties. Luckily, he also has a distinct and introspective eye for fashion – his editorials are moving and emotionally-charged.

Traditionally, musicians have been involved in design for their band’s shirts by either doing it themselves or asking designers they like. Now the tables have turned and artist are creating their own fashion.

Co-curated by Hisham Bharoocha and Soundscreen Design, editions began in October 09, and will be released throughout 2010. All editions are extremely limited-edition (less than 100), printed on organic Alternative Apparel garments, and come with hand numbered hang tags noting edition and designer.

According to stand-up comedian Raaaaaaaandy (with 8 a’s), Bieber’s stole his hit song “Baby” through violence and weed-smoking.  Check out the video and decide for yourself.  Cameos by Dave Sitek of TV On The Radio and Nick Zinner of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

LINK LOVE: Fashion Gone Rogue

I’m really not surprised, Karen O always does her own thing and that’s why I love her. I love her tights, I LOVE her gloves..but I can’t exactly figure out what that t-shirt/bedsheet contraption is around her body. Any help?

We’ll start at the root of the problem, Ed Westwick. Ed has a band called The Filthy Youth that he has put on hold to finish up with Gossip Girl. If you’re putting your so called “punk” band on hold to shoot a show called Gossip Girl, you shouldn’t be in a punk band. Not to mention the band really isn’t good. Don’t believe me? Check out their MySpace.

Next up Taylor Momsen. Trying to follow suit with Ed Westwick, she started a grunge inspired band called The Reckless that also isn’t good. Her bandmates suck, she’s awkward on stage, and there is a reason she got cut from being Hannah Montana back in the day, because she can’t really sing. I’ve listened to her songs over and over, and she sings in a monotoned voice. The point of grunge music is to scream and squeel, and while she tries she doesn’t succeed. If she really wants to start a band maybe something the in light of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs would be a bit more appropriate. Taylor has the look, she just needs the material to back it up.

And finally there’s Leighton Meester. Much to my suprise, B can sing (but then again so can anyone with auto tune)! Never the less, Leighton has by far the superior voice to the prior two, but again I don’t know where her intentions are with music. She chose to do her major debut doing guest vocals for the hipster dance wannabe’s Cobra Starship, but I’m interested in seeing where her career takes her. She belongs in pop music for sure.

For all these aspiring rock stars, maybe their music should remain a hobby. They will forever be cast in the shadow of their Gossip Girl Upper East Sider shadows. Not to mention, I thought that Jennifer Love Hewitt proved to world that sitcom stars can’t become triple threats (not since Jared Leto I guess, but look at him now!).

LINKAGE: oh no they didnt

Do you remember the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs?  I barely do. They kind of went mainstream, then disappeared and I think their flipping Burgers at the King. Well one Yeah to the third member refuses to fade into the shadows. Nick Zinner, guitarist of the emo/goth/punkish band is hosting a gallery exhibit feature poorly shot photos from his time on tour. I would care if I hadn’t already seen this shit done a million times before by party photographers like Merlin.  If you still can’t seem to get Maps out of your head, the head over. Other than that it doesn’t look to promising.
