I used to use nightlife as practice. I just wanted to go out and shoot everything I saw, in fact, I wasn't having fun unless I had my camera, maybe I used it to intentionally distance myself. Now, that I'm doing other things that create income, weddings, sometimes bands, portraits, it leaves little time for nightlife, although i still love it, I can't afford to do it unless I'm being paid... which is why there is so little in the nightlife gallery these days. But it's totally true, it seems there are more people taking photos than actually being in the shot.
Wha's the point to al this? I have no idea, I just wanted to add my 2 cents as a photographer who is NOT looking for ass.
Nikola.... your work is an inspiration to me... seriously... you have a talent that most of us ony dream of. That's all I really wanted to say.

As a musician and party promoter, I came at the whole nightlife photography thing from a completely different angle. I wanted to hire a photographer to photograph shows that I was throwing... when I couldn't find a decent one, I started packing my own camera to gigs. Pretty soon people started hiring me to shoot theirs, and the rest is history.

For me, it has always been about the music, and I see music in colors (and textures, and tones), so you'll notice in my photos, a lot of the colors are really alive and vibrant. I'm not so concerned about capturing the story so much as capturing the _song_.

Nikola, props to you, I love your work, but I don't think anybody's going to accuse me of imitating your style, or Bronque's any time soon. There may be some similarities, but every serious photog has his own unique vision and style.

I can think of a few dozen photogs who seem to be trying to look like you, but it isn't working, and it isn't getting them noticed in any meaningful way.

Hey G, thanks. Agreed on most counts - I like to say that for most male photographers, much like male musicians, one of the motivations (sometimes only!) to get into the business is the whole getting-into-girls'-panties-thing. Predictably, though, after a while you realize that if it's your dick doing the shooting, that the photos are not going to be very good, and you either change approach, or you don't. It shows either way.

And the line between art and porn is so wonderfully blurry at times - check our fellow New Yorker Siege, for example, or Roy Stuart, Tony Ward and others. Hell, Helmut Newton was called out for being a misogynistic pr0nographer back in the day, and that's a funny thought from this perspective. (Interestingly though, the power of his work has not diminished.)

And how the balls do you know about S&Y shoot? I never published any of those. But that's sort of the point: can you make art out of a situation like that? I like to make things difficult for myself - sometimes it works, and sometimes - oh boy.

I don't blame him for trying to distance himself from the nightlife photography scene; it has become an even bigger douchebag magnet than in years past. The influx of eager, bratty, spoiled kids from the midwest pretty much turned it into a joke; I can't even go to lit or home sweet home anymore without feeling like I'm at some surreal halloween party where nobody is having fun. There's a general spiritual depravity to the whole thing, and nobody really pays attention to these kids anymore anyway. Five years ago everyone was trying to copy them, and now everyone is just kind of laughing at them.

I've never heard of him (shows how much "nighlife photography" influences the general visual field), but his myspace page says he's 34 years old. At some point, taking pictures of naked, coked out 18 year old girls (like babysinead and yumnaa on the day of her 18th birthday) goes from being art to porn. I have a suspicion that the whole nightlife photography scene is just a way to get girls into your pants.

And Babysinead? She's in porn now. www.babysinead.com

While I will say that Nikola is a better photographer than I am, I think it is total bullshit to act like "telling a story" is the only right way to do night life photography. I shoot my parties for the people there. I like to do 100 portraits a night, I am not trying to shoot the story of the party. Of course it is his opinion that one was is better than the other, but I just think of what I am doing differently and I think it is sort of messed up for him to be so critical of a different way of thinking.
