the socks and sandals i agree with but everything else is really dumb.. i think the skirt and leggings and uggs is pretty hot… fashion depends on someone’s taste and how they dress shows a lot of personality.

if all you people are so uptight about others throwing around the word "ghetto" as what you think is a synonym for "black" then you obviously haven't listened to black rappers rap about themselves before. the word "n*gger?" i don't care if you're allowed to call your "own kind" that name, it's far more disrespectful than the generalization "ghetto" will ever be. i'm white. i'd never call anyone that. never. "ghetto" is far less severe and a stab at a psychographic culture, not a specific race.

ghetto goes along the same lines as the term "yuppie." no way around that one.

Ghetto can be black, white, hispanic. It could be any race. It's not a black thing, but because so many black readers took it to mean black, we wrote this article to show that white people make style mistakes as well.

And I am classist. If you choose a lifestyle that makes you talk like an uneducated child, dress like you're wearing your fathers oversize clothes, and insist on adhering to any aspect of "thug life", I and just about every other person NOT doing that is better than you.

I think the majority of those in the United States who feel it's better to get a job than enjoy government welfare would agree. It's not a black thing, it's a ghetto thing. Most black people are smart enough to know the difference, ghetto people aren't.

As for a definition of ghetto, it's a term used to define those who live in impoverished areas of a city, who choose to follow a lower standard of behavioral activities. These activities are normally criminal including drug use, robbery, spousal abuse, both physical & emotional, etc. Ghetto is used to describe the area in which a person can live as well as the way the person acts. So even though I technically live in what most would consider the ghetto (The Bronx), I am not ghetto. Those who aren't educated enough to understand the difference often get angry when they hear the term ghetto, or find that characteristics they display deem them ghetto by the general public.

It's silly how passionate people feel about this subject, cause the way you react only furthers proof that you are or aren't ghetto.

Oh please, you're talking to someone who has traveled across the entire United States, lived in many different types of neighborhoods and even spent some time in the "hood" myself so don't doubt my credibilty, I've been there and back many a time. So as much as you are sitting there saying that Fashion Indie and myself "generalize" you have no idea where we are from or what we have been through. I think we have all dealt with some "ghetto" people in our day and what has gone into creating these srticles are purely unbiased statements that come from personal experience and observign the biggest disasters in the fashion world. So don't sit there and judge our "prejudice, because these "Don'ts still apply to every one, it just so happens a certain demographic loves them even more than others. So pull your head out of your ass and give on this whole racist thing beacuse you are clearly wrong.

I usually dont get all polictical because I have strong opinions and can be aggressive, but I agree with alot of what is being said here. 1st of all, show me a definition of ghetto. A real definition. No one?? Moving on. 2nd ghetto isnt black or white, its just something you say when you feel someone is behaving a certain way. Who says its bad or good?? GHETTO is GHETTO in my book. And trust I've seen them come in all colors, shapes, and sizes. I'm even related to some! And because i love my ghetto ass cousins(some of whom are a variety of "mixtures")I've made it my personal duty to broaden their horizons. I equate ghetto with ignorance, which is simply lacking knowledge or information. And as far as fashion and it's many faux pas their definitely lacking knowledge! I haven't given them the address to Fashion Indie yet because they won't be able to wrap their Ghetto Fabulous minds around it!

I don't know I'm white and I equate "ghetto" with ignorant, poorly dressed, urban people whether they are white, black, mexican, spanish, native american, I don't care. Ghetto is ghetto. It's an image that people portray and has nothing to do with race. So say what you want, but when you are generalizing about what Fashion Indie's underlying motives or beliefs are, you are going just that generalizing and making yourself just a prejudice as you say we are. You should read in between your own lines. We all know what you meant by "ghetto": non-white and poor. This is the way that people in power positions reinforce that power. When you cut down them, you pump up yourself. You decide what is right and wrong just as "they" would should they have your privileged social position.
Of COURSE you are comparing black and white. The intro to this piece says it plain and clear. We can read between the lines! You are racist, AND classist even if you say in words that you aren't!
This kind of garbage is all over the internet, keeping people ignorant about race and class issues. People ABSOLUTELY equate "black" with "ghetto" when they read this kind of stuff. You were thinking it and you conveyed it. Of course from one white to another, it's always going to be funny to laugh at the expense of the "out-group."

GHETTO does NOT automatically equate to BLACK; so cease with the lumping us all together shit. There are varying levels of social economic classes amongst Blacks, just as there are amongst Whites. A more befitting title would have been "THE TEN: White Trash Fashion (sic) Don’ts".
