There are two reasons why anyone would pierce their nipples – one is to make them more interesting – the other is to make them more sensitive. Either way, there’s no special reason to have just one pierced – for a start it looks lop-sided, but as being pierced usually increases the amount of attention they get, it’s only fair to spread the load evenly.

There are lots of uneducated negative comments about having your nipples pierced – almost all are nonsense. As long as the job is done by a properly trained piercer and the right kind of jewelry is used, it’s just as safe as the earlobes and takes around the same time to heal. In the same way, wearing jewelry that’s too thin can act like a cheese-wire and gradually migrate out, so nipples are usually started with a heavier gauge than the ears. They can be stretched up a size or two later, but it’s better to start at the right size.

Typical nipple jewelry wieghs less than 1/4 oz, unless you’re into some kind of deviant play, so it won’t make your breasts droop. Many women with pierced nipples like to wear a demi-cup brassiere, to leave them uncovered. This allows the jewelry to move about during normal activity and can lead to constant arousal – great for a night out, but not so good around the supermarket.

It’s usual to start with a straight bar about twice as long as the thickness of the nipple, to allow room for the post-piercing swelling ( due to bruising ) to subside – it also makes it easier to keep the jewelry clean during the healing period. Staring with a ring isn’t generally a good idea, as the piercing needle is straight and inserting a ring distorts the line of the piercing.

In general, there’s no good reason why it shouldn’t be done if it appeals to you.

Once they have settled down, piercings tend to slacken off, so the jewelry can be changed for almost anything – rings, loops, horseshoes, etc., or the piercings can be used used to retain nipple shields a la Janet Jackson, or tassels a la Mae West.

The jewelry can be left out for hours or even days if you’re too embarrased to wear it for a physical, but your doctor won’t be surprised, so wear it with pride.

The recent case of the woman who was asked to remove her rings at the airport was all hype – she should have had no difficulty taking them out, though why she was required to is still a mystery to me.
