We Love You, But You’re Fat
Greetings and Salutations Fashion-Inders,
Normally there’s no point in actually reading Vogue, then again normally there’s no point at even looking at Vogue. But I must eat my words this month, because the April issue is AWE-SOOMEE-oh not intentionally mind you. While flipping through the April issue, I couldn’t help but notice an article about Rodarte designers Laura and Kate Mulleavy. I must say I love these girls. They are talented beyond belief and are from my hometown, proving that L.A. contains at least two people who can do more then design leggings and t-shirts.
The article follows them over a four-month period where they try to lose weight. Nothing out of the ordinary, these are up and coming designer who just want to make a good impression on the fashion community.
EXCEPT
It wasn’t their idea, Vogue asked them to lose weight. Now Vogue is in even bigger shit than it was before. Vogue has often chronicled staff members battle with weight (hmmmm….Andre Leon Talley). However this is the first time they have gone beyond their inner-circle. And now many are saying they stepped over the line.

they are not amused
Sure the article was padded with phrases like “how they lost weight without losing themselves….” And the article was pitched as an all expenses paid way to get ‘healthy.’ But we can all read between the lines, Vogue called out the Mulleavy sisters as ‘fat slobs.’ I can only imagine how awkward the initial phone call must have been between the Vogue editors and the sisters.

neither are they
I digress,
This article speaks to a bigger trend in fashion today. The model designer. When did designers have to start looking like models? Every since Marc and Karl transformed their aging bodies to that of an androgynous 20-something. I thought designers didn’t have to look like models?! What’s the fashion adage? “Those who can’t model, design!”
