Craig McDean Shot the Olsens, Marc Jacobs for This Year’s CFDA Journal

The CFDA Fashion Awards are this coming Monday and in celebration noted fashion photographer Craig McDean was tapped to shoot the CFDA Journal, featuring portraits of this year’s nominees.

Craig McDean Shot the Olsens, Marc Jacobs for This Years CFDA Journal

This year’s Journal was shot on-location for the first time in New York hence the name, “A New York Portfolio.” To wit, Proenza Schouler‘s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez¬†– nominated for Womenswear and Accessory Designer of the Year — were snapped in the subway for one of their portraits.

Swarovski Emerging Talent in Menswear nominee Phillip Lim learned to play basketball in an “impromptu lesson” for his photoshoot at McCaffrey Park.

On the day of the Met Gala, Marc Jacobs hopped off a plane from Paris and high-tailed it to Brooklyn where he was photographed getting a tattoo, only to then book it back to Manhattan, throw on a sheer dress and hit the red carpet.

Fellow Womenswear Designer of the Year nominees, The Row‘s Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen‘s portrait proved a little more difficult with Ashley stuck in L.A. and Mary-Kate in New York. So creative director Trey Laird got creative and had the sisters Skype face-to-face.

While those designers will likely be in attendance on Monday at Avery Fisher Hall, Fashion Icon Award honoree Johnny Depp and International Award honoree Rei Kawakubo will have their awards accepted by mutual friend and pencil-thin-mustache provocateur John Waters.

Depp, who starred in Water’s¬†Cry Baby, is currently filming The Lone Ranger in the Navajo Nation; Waters, a longtime fan of Kawakubo, is expected to sit with her husband and business partner Adrian Joffe at the ceremony.

The CFDA calls Waters’ involvement “a complete coincidence,” but the absences of two of their top honorees — one notoriously reclusive, the other probably getting high in the desert — came as no surprise to the Council, which was perfectly aware “that there might be a chance that both would not be able to attend but felt both were deserving no matter what.” [WWD]
