BERLIN, MARRAKESH, MOROCCO, PARIS, NORMANDIE AND BACK TO PARIS

Edited by

I have been going through some changes in life and in a way a new book… originally I was saying a new chapter but I was talking to some people and they said it is not just chapters in your life sometimes you have new books… I like it because I honestly do feel like I started a new book.

I went to see a tarot card reader back in April and it was wild he knew everything about what I was going through without knowing anything about me. It is interesting now because he made all these predictions by the cards he chose and I laughed at a bunch of them but it is wild because I think he actually knew what might happen… it is wild how maybe someone can see a little bit into your future.

Well if my future works out the way he said it might then it is pretty good and I am excited and if it doesn’t I am still excited about life and possibilities….

I love to travel and when I winded up making a huge change in my life I told myself do what you love – book a trip – plan on something.

The Virgo in me loves to plan, plan, plan and have things to look ahead to and things to be excited about and that is what I started to think about and do… I didn’t book the trip in full to like the week before I was leaving but I had an idea where I wanted to go.

Traveling alone is a weird feeling at times – it is liberating and exciting and you get to do what you want but at the same time it does get a bit lonely.  I am constantly inspired so I did try to keep myself looking and searching and on the hunt for interesting things to photograph or try.  The weirdest parts were dinners… there are times I do like to go to a restaurant alone or go to the movies alone but I don’t like to do it 10 nights in a row… that is for sure.  So during “dinner time” I did have the tendency to drive my friends bonkers with emails so I apologize R, K, K and J for tons of emails during that time…. Just being a dinner alone but being able to converse still with my friends at home made me feel like I was having a conversation with someone… it was just that they usually were in the middle of the day while for me it was 9:30 at night.

I plan to talk all about my journey in detail and map out some of the things I saw and particulars.  But before I do that I wanted to give you the visual tour of my journey.  Then next week or when I get a second I will give you some of my favorite places I visited so if you visit Berlin, Paris, Normandy or Marrakesh – you can check out some of my favorite spots.

In the interim, I do want to thank my incredible tour guide Mustapha in Marrakesh, Morocco – without him I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy this beautiful place the same way. He took me to all the souks and key places and he introduced me to wonderful artisans and curators who have searched the continent of Africa for wonderful finds.  I even found jewelry from the 18th century from one of his friends.  Beyond that we spent a bit of time at MajorelleGardens, which is part of the YSL estate in Marrakesh and the most enchanting and visually stimulating place I have ever been. It was magical and memorable and I was very happy to share it with him.  I am happy to provide his info to anyone traveling to Marrakesh because he is the top guide there and an amazing human being.

So here is my tour ….

Berlin – I went for the Bread & Butter trade show … I walked and walked through the trade show and met so many wonderful people

Then flew to Switzerland waited about a hour and got on a plane to Marrakesh – I would say like a 5 hour trip in total from Berlin to get there that day. Marrakesh is full of spirit, religion, culture, history, artisans, music, delicious food – so much to enjoy – it was incredible and I loved every minute of it.  Here is a quick photo journey….

Oh I rode a camel in Marrakesh – I can see myself in a past life in Egypt riding a camel… it was easy and so much fun and my camel was awesome…. I loved every minute! I like camels because they are part of the name and concept of CARAVAN – this journey — with camels and caravans… and I have a special appreciation for them.

BERLIN, MARRAKESH, MOROCCO, PARIS, NORMANDIE AND BACK TO PARIS BERLIN, MARRAKESH, MOROCCO, PARIS, NORMANDIE AND BACK TO PARIS

From Marrakesh, Morocco I flew to Paris- quick trip maybe 3.5 hours if that …. I stayed at one of my favorite hotels there if not my favorite, Mama Shelter – it is an incredible hotel with an awesome restaurant and just super cool décor… it was so enjoyable …. So I stayed over 1 night and the next day took the train to Deuville, France – the seaside resort. This is the place in Coco Avant Chanel and all those movies, Coco Chanel visits and she gets her famous striped nautical stripe top… I loved it you could feel the history… you just want to dress up like you are in the 1920s and sit on the beach all glamorous – it was the most beautiful beach with a huge personality – and it was celebrating its 100 year anniversary with a photo exhibit.  Some of my heroes like Josephine Baker were photographed at the beach. The other cool aspect was along the beach there were cabanas and each cabana was devoted to different famous people – there was everyone from Rock Hudson, Matt Damon, Tom Hanks, Farah Fawcett, Parker Posey, Harvey Weinstein… I also spent time in Trouville and I stayed in a lovely place called Honfleur.  There was so  much history and I couldn’t stop taking photos… I loved every minute I was able to spend there.

While I was in Normandy I hoped on a carousel… which I think some people might have thought was strange since there were a lot of little children going round and round on the merry go round… I didn’t care. I love the kid in me and I jumped on the elephant ( because I love elephants) and I sat there and I enjoyed the view… boats, a church, beautiful architecture, and beautiful buildings and it was just one of my favorite parts of my whole trip!

BERLIN, MARRAKESH, MOROCCO, PARIS, NORMANDIE AND BACK TO PARIS

I stayed in Normandy for two full days and 1 night and I went back to Paris by train staying there for another 3 nights.

It was awesome because when I arrived back in Paris it was Bastille Day and I ate at Kong that night and it is all glass and I was actually able to see a few of the fireworks.  Kong is an incredibly cool restaurant with delicious food – it sits above the Kenzo store.  Oh that night I stayed at this awesome hotel that Christian Lacroix designed – it was beautiful and feminine, smelled incredibly and was decorated awesome! I stayed there one night and stayed the last two nights back at Mama Shelter because the pricing there is so fair and it is just a fun hotel.  I will tell you more the next round where they located and stores I visited etc.  But in the interim please check out my photo journey. The bummer was that I went to the YSL retrospective but you weren’t allowed to take photos.  If you can find some online try to see this exhibit – it was incredible and I was so lucky to have been able to visit it while in Paris.  I also of course visit Laduree, Colette, Merci, Angelina, Tsumori Chisato and many other stores which I will note another time. The other cool aspect was that I saw so many space invader mosaics which you will see some of them in my photo slide show.

Here are some photos of Paris

Oh – I love street culture and seeing how kids react on the streets and what they are wearing, what they are doing, how they hang out with each other… and I spent about 45 minutes just watching and photographing a whole group of skate boarders at one of  my favorite places in Paris… PALAIS DE TOKYO

BERLIN, MARRAKESH, MOROCCO, PARIS, NORMANDIE AND BACK TO PARIS BERLIN, MARRAKESH, MOROCCO, PARIS, NORMANDIE AND BACK TO PARIS

Lastly, not to bore you but I saved my own personal photo journey for last… traveling alone you get to be an excellent self portrait photographer – ha ha… I love taking photos of myself or having photos of myself to document how I felt, dressed, looked during different times of my life – whether it be during a visit to this garden in Marrakesh where I felt like a princess or walking in the streets of Paris or lying by the pool….

The most important thing that the tarot card reader said to me besides the fact that I would realize a huge part of my future in June ( which I think I did – but that is another story) but what he did say is that you are going through a self actualization period of your life where you are focusing on the positives in your life and you are enjoying your life and building a life. You are learning how to be independent but you are also learning how to be surrounded by the people you should be surrounded by in your life… it is true but he also made me realize how important it is to really love yourself. You can’t truly love anyone until you love yourself. There are days I hate my hair or what I put on or  that I said something stupid  but for the most part I love myself… not just the way I look but the way I feel and the way I care and the way I love and work… I have awesome work ethics… I always wish I knew more – like I really knew how to speak the three languages I studied in high school and college … I wish I read more and knew more about music and film and art… but all you can do is try — today is for learning and being inspired and to inspire and to share…. So I share with you some of my favorite ME moments… and some of my favorite places and some of my favorite outfits… including my Danny Roberts tees that I love sooo much … he is a genius !

Bread + Butter Berlin, Germany

Edited by

I have seriously met close to 400 + people in last two days at the largest fashion trade show in the world.  The group who organizes Bread + Butter is one impressive team… It is organized, visually stimulating and cool.   They thought of everything and I believe they inspired a majority of brands to be the best they can be since people around the globe are here to see, learn, order and give feedback!

I came to check out the show for a couple of reasons:

A. To cover it for my curated.culturejam.com and debonairmag.com.  I have been able to write about rad people and rad happenings… Deepak Chopra, Blake from Toms Shoes, What Goes Around Comes Around vintage, Coachella, etc. B. To cover it for my blog – this one – www.caravangirl.com

C. To see what trends, colloborations, new collections etc are out there

D.  To look for new international collections that I need to know about

E. To meet people in my field of business and see how amazing this trade show is

F. To visit with my clients from THINK PR

G. To hang out in Berlin + observe what is happening in this city

So who am I if I gave you my card and your visiting my site for the first time…

1. I am the writer behind www.caravangirl.com – a blog I created to track my events I organize and dj, the events THINK PR organizes, things I attend such as parties and exhibits, things I love and just my general life… It gives me the opportunity to share what is happening with my life + also tell you about cool things I saw along the way- bands, films, artists, djs, etc.

2.  I have written for other blogs such as curated.culturejam.com, style360.com, debonairmag.com

3. I find new talent for colloborations and fashion show events such as STYLE 360 which we help create the schedule for… Style 360 occurs during fashion week and are the fashion shows that Elle and Elle.com created… It is our job to help find the designers that participate. I am always on the search for new talent … In the last year I got designers such as Rebecca Minkoff, Geren Ford, Walter and many others to participate

4. I work with a lot of young talent to find them clothing for red carpet events and photo shoots to get an idea visit www.shopcaravan.com to see just some of the names that visited me over the last two years.  You will see I am lucky for it to include cast members from Glee, Gossip Girls, 90210 etc. I am always searching for the coolest contemporary designers to dress the talent for events + shoots

5. I am Reshma Patel’s from THINK PRs partner – we work with a lot of brands at Bread + Butter such as Bensimon, Junk Food, bobi, 80%20 and a few others… Visit us at www.thinkpublicrelations.com 6. I organize events and fashion shows and I dj

7. Lastly -  for all the street brands… We are organizing an event in NYC called traction with some of the coolest brands… we will be sending out info soon

Bread + Butter Berlin, Germany

TRACTION is an innovative event series that celebrates the sneaker culture as a whole, providing a venue to not only buy and sell, but to connect directly with influencers and consumers in an open and unique environment.  An ever-expanding forum, TRACTION aims to bring together creative and pioneering minds in fashion, music and art.

Why the name Caravan + www.caravangirl.com

Because in 2005 I launched a business called Caravan which was a store in a winneabago and it drove around the city and sold the coolest collections such as Tokidoki, J lindeberg, Merc and about 50 collections from around the globe. I love finding new talent and supporting really good corporations.  About a year later I opened an actual store on Great Jones and sold about 100 collections everything from Rebecca Taylor to Edun to Genetic Denim.

About a year after that I opened a store on the UES and for over 3 years almost 4 I ran a mobile store and 2 stores.  It was hard because I had all my other responsibilities so I slowly closed Caravan as a store but it exists today as a studio where I still wardrobe talent and recently during upfronts worked with 40 actors from different television series. Visit www.shopcaravan.com for some more info.

I love clothes. I love people’s personal style. When I return on the 19th I will start posting all my photos from Bread + Butter and my other travels. In the meantime google some of the rad labels I hung out with…. This is a fifth of the people I met…so much more to come..

Another week of SPUN – check it out every Tuesday at THE FOUNDATION at 137 ESSEX STREET off Rivington – you have the opportunity to go behind the DJ booth and learn how to DJ for 15 minutes or if you are learning how to be a DJ – try out your skills for 15 minutes. The party starts at 9pm and the open djing is from 10:00 – 11:30 every Tuesday night.  The party goes on after that. Bring friends and have fun – everything you need is provided.

Charles Thorp wrote an awesome review of the party and explains how it works here:

I am so excited because my friends have been coming to visit me on Tuesday to check the party out and my best friend, Kerri and her boyfriend Mark came out …. Here are some photos from the last two weeks’ parties of SPUN.

Last week, I was in Los Angeles flew out with my buddy, Josh, we were supposed to dj a party for my client, bobi and Keep A Child Alive but we arrived and unfortunately the sound system had some serious technical difficulties and there was no sound – so we both had our first silent dj set.  I knew what I wanted to play but I never got to play it. The funny part is that my friend, Brandon Barash, from General Hostipal was all set up to play the harmonica while I played ‘Janglin by one of my favorite bands – Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes but it never happened. My buddy Danny & David Roberts stopped by to support and Julie from PJ Salvage ( the most amazing pjs in the world) and my one of my favorite favs, Amanda Macnaughton ( from CultureJam).  Kara Lusardi, the designer of bobi, is brilliant – her clothes are just super wearable, well designed and great for traveling.  Here are some photos from the party. She raised over $5,000 in 2 hours selling samples for $20 each and all the money – all proceeds went to Keep A Child Alive – an organization where you see the results. They are making change happen and they are giving Africa and other third world countries a better future.  Leigh Blake is one of my heroes and everyone that works at KCA is awesome. I love talking to them and I wish I could do more with them.

So the next day I went to visit the THINK PR LA office… here are some photos of the office and Jen & Grace were around so I caught them on camera….

So funny Jeremy Searle, Jen’s brother, who is always a hoot and just a superstar is on some rad Toshiba commercials… so we watched those….

TO MALIBU

To check out the Café Habana Outpost which = good food and amazing atmosphere – everything from the décor to the Shepard Fairey original on the wall … check out some photos of the café, the surrounding stores, and our trip to some of the stores including JUICY COUTURE ( which is such a cute little shop – we went in because my friend AMANDA’s face graces one of the t-shirts there – we all had to get one … my friend Jen & her took a photo in a photo booth and the designer liked the image they used it for one of the shirts they sell – it is adorable!) … FREE CITY…. The next day I met up with my buddy, Peter James Lee, we had some talks about life + then we chatted a bit about “how to incorporate new talent into the garment industry” meaning sewers, pattern makers etc… to learn more visit www.madeinmidtown.org

PJL is just an awesome dude – full of ideas, super creative, super fun, and a huge heart.  My friend, Josh, introduced me to him and I am very lucky to have them both in my life.
Check out his blog at – not only is he an amazing designer, creative direction, trend watcher, trend setter… he also takes amazing photos and just has an eye of wonder and coolness…. http://www.nycparislondonhktokyola.com

After that I was like Jen & Josh we gotta go to the Cobrasnake store… and so glad we did… I picked up some awesome books and we got to hang out with all the guys that make it happen including this awesome store/ gallery… I found myself a cool vest and picked up some books…. And we just hung out and chatted with the guys for a while.. so glad I popped by – if you don’t know about Cobrasnake – google … we are lucky to be in 2010 and to have talent like this surrounding us.

Speaking of talent, I encountered some really sad news last week when I opened my Sunday Styles to see the world and many people close to him, lost Tobias Wong.  He was a genius.  I was able to work with him during our time working with Felissimo and I knew from the day I met him he was a stand out artist/designer.  He had an eye and a mind that created just really smart items.  He always put a smile on my face and in his presence I always knew I was with someone brilliant.  The last time I saw him, I asked him about these matches he made using a play on the Chanel logo. I wanted to get some for my buddy, Josh for his birthday since he has a Chanel tattoo and has an admiration for Gabrielle Coco Chanel and Karl etc… and Tobias was so happy I asked about them and gave me a few – I remember I asked if they were signed and he was so sweet about the whole thing. I wanted to pay him and he said don’t worry about it… and he had such a big smile that day.  He was always so kind, so lovely, so interesting and just an awesome person. If you never saw Tobias Wong’s work at one of the many museum shops or at Felissimo etc you should google him.

What I took away from reading the article and feeling so bad for all the people that loved him was that you never know what is going to happen in life. We are all on a journey of life and we don’t have control over it sometime. I had some serious suprises this year and nothing is set in stone… but you just need to take each day as it comes… you need to enjoy life and enjoy the people who make you feel good … go after what you want…. Run instead of walking sometime…. Don’t be lazy… Voice your opinion try to make your dreams come true and love with all your heart.  Your heart will get broken sometime – it just happens but sometimes it doesn’t and it feels really great to love your family and your friends and to be loved back.

The other thing I learned is to support talent – don’t be afraid of it. If you have a talent or hobby – dedicate time to it.  Support your friends who have specific talents and encourage them to explore their skills.  And support TALENT… support the arts … dance, music, art, etc… all forms of it and when you find people who inspire you – embrace it and tell them.  I think Tobias knew I was wowed by his talent that day I saw him for the matchbooks – I hope so… I hope that every artist I notice that inspires me realizes that they inspired me. Art is all around us we need to embrace it and share it with others.

When I got back from Los Angeles, Robbie asked me to go check out his cousin,  Domenic’s band –substratus- at the THE CAKE SHOP on Sunday.  Check them out…  http://www.myspace.com/substratuspunk

I never went to THE CAKE SHOP before but it is really cute upstairs and as you walk down the stairs, there are lots of cool people who left there mark… see some photos as well as a great photo of the SUBSTRATUS by Robbie Bellon.

It is funny because I was a new wave /alternative / classic rock … with a little NKOTB and Bon Jovi girl growing up and now I love indie rock and a mix of global and electronic music… a very small part of me appreciates House music because of my times in Ibiza… I would say I have eclectic taste.. I have been to Heavy Metal shows but I never really loved them but I am gaining a bit of an appreciation in punk music… Substratus I would say is a punk band… and it is funny because on the way home from LA, Josh gave me a dvd of THE CLASH.  Mind you that THE CLASH were the coolest dressers ever… they made their own clothes… I watched the dvd and would rewind here and there to see some of their jump suits and painted shirts and jackets and just how they wore their clothes…I have on some of my trips to LA and abroad watched about 3 or 4 documentaries and films on PUNK music and I do have an appreciation for it now and I enjoy it.

After the show we walked by THE CARAVAN OF DREAMS… one of the yummiest restaurants in the city – check it out – so good !

Last night I winded up walking by this little mini gallery for “bike clothing” on Bowery – they have a Caravan in the back and just some really cool décor – the space has a great vibe and check it out if you are near Gemma or the John Varvatos store it is the other side of the street off Great Jones on Bowery.

Well Happy Fourth of July and I won’t be writing in possibly for a little bit because I am off to the Bread and Butter show in Berlin next week and to see some of the Mercedes Benz fashion shows and then going to Morrocco and Paris and Normandy.  I am very excited about my trip but definitely going to miss NYC and ice cream at Lulas. http://www.lulassweetapothecary.com/

Oh last thing!!! My father recently reminded me besides being my hero that he was a hero once for someone on their wedding day — he was driving and saw a car with a BRIDE stuck along the side of the road – and he pulled over and indeed the bride was going to be late to the wedding so he drove them…. the local newspapers covered the story … check it out ….

COCO CHANEL, FIGMENT, ETSY, ART, DJING, GOOD MOVIES, GOOD TIMES, I AM

This week was awesome – it flew by – the only bad part was I caught a mini cold – boo! I got stuck in the rain and I got a little under the

weather – all about tea and emergen – c and my friend told me I needed to do the whole gargle salt water thing to help my sore throat which

worked but eventually had to go to the doctors since we are way busy here at THINK PR …

If you ever wondered how the salt water helps the sore throat… here

you go…

http://www.ehow.com/how-does_4607558_gargling-salt-water-sore-throat_.html

So I went to see the movie about Coco & Igor …

See Coco + Igor… I love the styling + the interior design elements of this film. I love Gabrielle Coco Chanel.. I wish she was still alive. It would be my goal to meet her but since that can’t happen…. I just want to learn as much as possible about her and he style.

COCO CHANEL, FIGMENT, ETSY, ART, DJING, GOOD MOVIES, GOOD TIMES, I AM

During the week I also … ate ice cream, watched Empire Records, met OO…

Find O Os work on West Broadway.. 2,500 famous peoples faces… Crazy!!!

Seeing everywhere and loving these.

And then the next day I saw some friends who I haven’t seen in a while including my friend, Laura, and then I watched the end of the World Cup USA vs ENGLAND and then saw my buddy Lisa and hung out with her and her

kids… so much fun. I also witnessed the annual Hare Krishna Parade right near my apartment. The colors and the dancing were beautiful and for some reason I found this to be a true NYC melting pot experience of

cultures and religions coming together and enjoying the music and dancing.  It ended in Washington Square Park and people were still dancing and having FUN!

The next day I went to GOVERNERS ISLAND – you just go to Battery Park (near the Staten Island Ferry) and you pick it up – it is not even a ten min ferry ride and you are there and it is FREE… I went there to see

the FIGMENT art exhibition. It was a bit like “Burning Man” I expect but I saw some cool pieces… here are some photos. My personal favorite was the WISH TREE… it is amazing to see what was wished for – I want to be

a superhero, to be a mom, to be a princess… it was very special … my favorite was one said ROSE … my Grandmother’s name and my middle name.. it was like a mini sign.  I liked the fact that ETSY was there

because they were selling goods from new artists which was really smart- I hope it was successful for them.

We will be having more of these dj parties and I am super excited.

I met these kids that just graduated from Marist – I have to say they had the best musical taste all night and I was so excited that they went to my alma mater.

And then I went to see an incredible film called I AM LOVE with someone who I admire so much, Waris Ahluwalia  – he is the founder of HOUSE OF

WARIS, an incredible jewelry collection sold at incredible stores likeColette and he has appeared in amazing films and he is just a creative genius. He is also so kind and nice and we didn’t get to talk at the

premiere but we spoke at the CFDA after party and he is just really incredible. Also, in the movie is Tilda Swinton, who is amazing and was perfectly cast for her role. If you can see this movie please go and see

it – the cinematography is incredible, it is filmed in ITALY, and the music and styling is incredible as well.  I loved every moment of this film.

WATCH THE TRAILER :

After the film, I ventured finally to ABC KITCHEN – which was an incredible visual experience – it is a beautiful restaurant and the food is really great as well and the menu is exciting.  You should definitely check it out. I was able to catch up with a good friend, Jen and it was

a great night.

Next week I am in Los Angeles to dj this event for Keep A Child Alive

and Bobi with my buddy Josh Madden and I hear my buddy, Brandon Barash

might stop by and play the harmonica for me… this kid is another

genius – amazing actor, photographer, singer, harmonica player and

philanthropist and just a good guy.  I am very excited.

But tonight I go to Meatball in Lower East Side on Stanton / Allen for

some meatballs with my meatballs, Reshma & Robbie. Wish my name started

with a R too … maybe I will borrow my mom’s name for the night -

THINGS I ALWAYS LOVED….

I went to Radio City to see Conan O’Brien with Mr. Robbie Bellon and Mr. Mike Pierce and it was great… he is a genius and he had some amazing suprises such a VAMPIRE WEEKEND, Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart and many others…. Check out some photos … the one of Radio City, Robbie photographed with his amazing new camera… sassy ! Conan is very funny but more so then his humor what stood out that night to me is we must go on…. Even if life slaps you in the face and you get shocked by some crazy news you must turn things on their side and move on…. Time is wasted if you just sit around feeling sorry for yourself.  Conan decided to get back on his feet and he even put together this amazing tour around the country so people can enjoy and laugh with him. Laughter is a great gift. You should be able to laugh by yourself, at yourself, with yourself and most importantly with the people you love. I laugh with the people closest to me and it is one of the things I love most about the time with them. I am a pretty serious person – I am a Virgo – so a bit uptight sometimes… born the same day as Karl Lagerfeld but I try not to be so serious all the time… there is a time for seriousness and there is a lot more time for laughter!

I also had the opportunity to visit my best friend, Kerri, in Astoria – which was really awesome – all the yummy food… on the way to her apartment I stopped at this WELLING COURT MURAL PROJECT — and around the corner I even found a BANKSY ….

This is a wonderful project curated by www.adhocart.org and they put all these artists together and they started their creations on May 19, 2010 and they were done on May 22nd, 2010 – that is the way I like to work… if you say you are going to do something… do it… go ADHOC!

You will see many different pieces and you can look up the artists from this article http://www.qgazette.com/news/2010-06-09/Front_Page/Welling_Court_Mural_Project_Transforms_Neighborhoo.html
