Up a winding Cali mountain road, Lake Tahoe glimmers expansively beyond loose-leaf trees, and Melissa Michelsen designs, cuts, prints and sews accessories that are trickle their way into cities, finding people who Love Mert.
Love Mert is the brand Melissa started back in 2000, using recycled materials before sustainability was cool. She uses deadstock fabrics, old leather jackets, and textiles like this purple geometric vision from 1979.
As a kid, growing up in Vermont with her artist/woodworking father, Melissa dreamt of moving to NYC and becoming a famous fashion designer. Now, all her siblings live in Brooklyn, and while she gave NY and even Portland a try, she’s at home in a bit more nature.
These rings are all in the family. She made the shapes out of clay, and sends them to her dad in Vermont. He carves them out of wood and sends them back to Lake Tahoe where she dyes them with vinegar and paints them.
