Hearst has become the first big magazine publisher to strike a deal with the all-powerful, all-seeing, all-evil Apple to sell digital subscriptions to its magazines on the iPad.

Starting next month, you can purchase subscriptions to the Bible O: The Oprah Magazine, Esquire and something called Popular Mechanics for $19.99 a year, or $1.99 a month through iTunes.

Other publishers have been slow to get in bed with Apple because the computer giant is notoriously a selfish lover, demanding a 30 percent cut of any subscription sale completed in the iTunes store.

Hearst refused to discuss the terms of their deal, however, simply saying, “We came to an equitable and fair agreement to owning customers together.”

I doubt they’ll truly “own” anyone “together” since Oprah already owns and operates everyone and everything as it is, or are we forgetting the 2008 elections? [WWD]
