The words seem odd to say. Bettie Page is dead at 85.

The pinup queen and inspiration for millions has lost to her recent battle with a failed heart after suffering an attack on December 2nd.  Page was famous for an estimated 20,000 glossy photographs she shot from 1949 – 1957. A pioneer in the sexual revolution, Page suffered from years of depression, violent mood swings and spent a few years in a state mental institution.

She has been immortalized in comic books, biographies, movies, websites, shot glasses, Zippo lighters, action figures and just about every other product extension imaginable.

Later in life Bettie turned to religion but she was always shocked by her cultural relevance. “I have no idea why I’m the only model who has had so much fame so long after quitting work,” she said in an interview with The Times in 2006.

There was a single request for the interview, that she not be photographed.

“I want to be remembered,” she said, “as I was when I was young and in my golden times. . . . I want to be remembered as the woman who changed people’s perspectives concerning nudity in its natural form.”

A real life vixen and hero, Bettie Page will be missed.
