Maison Martin Margiela is the master of the trompe l’oeil. You think you’re seeing one thing, and BAM they flip it on you. Like this dollar bill wallet or these flowing texture-but-actually-printed garments. Now they’ve made a bag that is shaped like a plastic bag, is shiny like a plastic bag, and even has that curve in the middle where they’d be strung together at the supermarket. But of course, this is no true plastic sack.

Made of calfskin, this bag is actually quite luxurious. But that’s what they do at the Maison, they experiment. Will we wear something that looks like a plain black plastic shopping bag? Let’s examine:
