Short cuts always have an element of androgyny but these slick shapes play it up with strong edges and clean-cut styling. The pointed perimeters at the cheekbone have the structural emphasis of a sideburn while the deep side part and smooth surface give the shape a dapper touch. A smokey eye or bold lip provides just the right amount of contrast –– like the sexy appeal of a pair of boyfriend jeans paired with a slinky top. Read on for steps to achieving this bold, confident look. –– Laura Martin

Step 1: A short pixie with square layers provides a lean, structured shape. Keep the edges clean, but ask for internal texturizing; removing bulk and diffusing ends allows the cut to transition easily from slick to tousled.

Step 2: Cocktail a nickel-size of texture paste and hair gel, mixing them together before running through strands.

Step 3: Use a comb to divide hair deeply on one side. Comb hair smooth all over, customizing front with a slight pompadour or a slicked bang.
