America’s First Couturier: Charles James

Although he was born in England, Charles Wilson Brega James is often referred to as America’s first couturier. The son of a British officer and an American socialite from Chicago, Charles James built a reputation as one of the finest couturiers of the 20th century, but his personal demons and exacting temperament proved his ultimate undoing.

Vogue Festival Draws a Fashionable Crowd

Coachella wasn’t the only fashion-forward festival going down this weekend. On the other side of the pond industry luminaries — ranging from Tom Ford and bff Stella McCartney, to Diane von Furstenbreg and Dolce & Gabbana and Natalia Vodianova and Rachel Zoe – regaled attendees of the inaugural Vogue Festival with advice and anecdotes on a series of panels during the two-day event. 10 Fashion Stars of the 17th Annual Out 100

Andrej Pejic gets wrapped up in Nastassja Kinski. Brad Goreski channels Yves Saint Laurent. And Nicola Formichetti holds up two pork shanks. Is this just another day in the glamorous life? Yes, but it’s also Out Magazine‘s homage to some of the fashion industry’s best and gayest. For their 17th Annual Out 100 list, the mag enlisted the talents of Gavin Bond to create portraits inspired by iconic photos of the past. Mining the catalogs of Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Irving Penn and Helmut Newton, among others, Bond’s photos serve a fitting tribute to the 100 queens, trannies, lesbians, and other assorted queers that showed that if things don’t necessarily get better, they at least get fabulous.

Anna Wintour has been credited/blamed/lauded/criticized for the current proliferation of celebrity-driven magazine covers of the past 15 years or so. Love it or hate it, a model has a better chance winning a Pulitzer than landing a U.S. Vogue cover — with a few notable exceptions.
