QUEL SCANDALE! Presents Fashion Fascists: Christian Dior’s “Nazi Look”

After Hugo Boss recently apologized for its namesake founder’s Nazi past, we’ve realized that designers were heiling Hitler left and right all up and through the 20th century. So in light of this —  and of the coming Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashana (mazel!) — we’re highlighting the biggest fascists in fashion history as part of our ongoing Quel Scandale! feature. First up, Christian Dior got down and Nazi decades before John Galliano drunkenly slurred his way right out of a job.

Galliano’s Tenure at Dior Ended with a Whisper Amidst the Roar

Apparently there was some hullabaloo about John Galliano during Paris Fashion Week — who knew?  But what turned out to be Galliano’s final collection for Christian Dior was as anti-climactic as his fall from grace. A pretty but by no means fitting end to a brilliant career, Dior’s Fall 2011 will no doubt provide loads of speculation as to its creative director’s state of mind.

How Did the Dior Show Go Off Today in Paris?

From the flurry of of tweets fluttering in from thousands of miles and six hours away, the show was a success. Sidney Toledano, chief executive of Christian Dior, made a speech before the show, Karlie Kloss opened (naturally) in dramatic cape (naturally) and the entire atelier came out to take a bow. Dior posting a united front in what has surely been one of the most important — for good and for bad —  fashion weeks in quite some time. Update: Quotes from Sidney Toledano’s speech after the jump.
