Brazilian Slum Pulls Itself Up By Flip-Flop Strap

Edited by

While we’ve been busy handing out Model Citizen Awards, we found a real live model citizen in the rough slums of Brazil. One tough bid, Silvinha Oliveira found her way out, worked her way through fashion school, turned away her nose up at the frivolity of high fashion’s industry and, instead, brought it back to the favelas to flourish. Upon imparting her sartorial knowledge to a few women in the community, she was able to start her own company: Retalhos Cariocas. She takes scraps of factories’ leftover fabrics and uses them to transform the country’s ubiquitous Havaianas into gladiators, booties, wrap shoes and more. All at once, Silvinha is giving fabric andher neighbors a second chance at life.

GISELE BUNDCHEN for VOGUE BRAZIL OCTOBER 2010

Edited by

Gisele, Gisele, Gisele it’s almost like a Marsha Brady story, or in better terms she’s like that girl in high school that you absolutely hated but loved at the same time… I don’t think you could ever call Gisele ugly or find a totally bad photo taken of her, even if the photo did look like shit she would still stump me by how she’d obviously end up  making it amazing.

Lucas: Was there any favorite childhood artist you looked up to when you were young?

Danny: Yes! John R. Neill who illustrated a lot of the Land of Oz stories. Also Pauline Baynes. She was friends with C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien and illustrated The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings. She was actually a map maker by trade.

INTERVIEW: Danny Roberts Of Igor + Andre

Lucas: Would you say living in California gave you your aesthetic eye for art?

Danny: Uh, I don’t know if it was California per se. But I love living here!

Lucas: How did you come up with your blog name Igor + Andre?

Danny: Actually, I haven’t really said why it’s called that yet. It’s named after a project I’ve been planning for the last few years, but it’s not ready yet. Sorry about that.

Lucas: In the fashion industry who would you love to work with?

Danny: Actually, it breaks my heart, but truly the one person I always wanted to collaborate with in my life was Lee Alexander McQueen. But also, I would love to collaborate with Karl Lagerfeld.

INTERVIEW: Danny Roberts Of Igor + Andre

Lucas: For an aspiring fashion artist, any advice to give, like materials to use or where to start?

Danny: For materials, I think the best approach is to systematically learn each medium. Take one at a time, be patient and move on to the next when you feel ready.

Lucas: Any future goal you would love to accomplish soon?

Danny: I really want to launch a web channel that focus on art, music and fashion!
