In honor of Election Day, an oldie but a goodie.

Though the President traditionally gets all the attention — what with all those treaties and diplomatic affairs — the First Lady is usually the heart and soul of the White House. Their influence often extends to social and even political issues, though their style at times has an even bigger impact. Pledge allegiance to these 10 fashionable First Ladies.

1. Jacqueline Lee Bouvier Kennedy Onassis (1961 – 1963)

The standard-bearer for fashionable First Ladies, Jackie O is also one of the most oft-referenced and influential style icons of all-time, having popularized many a trend from pill-box hats to oversized sunglasses. She was elected to the International Best-Dressed Hall of Fame in 1965.

I was center square from 1969 to 1978, during which I perfected the art of the zing as well as a crippling cocaine addiction. Bea Arthur was responsible for both. @LesFabian lester dot brathwaite at gmail
